Abstract

A tag encoder is provided having a tag dot generator configured to generate encoded tags having single bits positioned in each tag based on information on an orientation of a page to be printed, a tag structure template, fixed data bits and variable data bits. Each fixed data bit is the same for all tags to be printed on a page and each variable data bit is specific to a corresponding tag to be printed on the page.

Claims

1. A tag encoder having a tag dot generator configured to generate encoded tags having single bits positioned in each tag based on information on an orientation of a page to be printed, a tag structure template, fixed data bits and variable data bits, each fixed data bit being the same for all tags to be printed on a page and each variable data bit being specific to a corresponding tag to be printed on the page.

2. A tag encoder as claimed in claim 1 having a redundancy encoder for optionally encoding said fixed and/or said variable data.

3. A tag encoder as claimed in claim 2 wherein the redundancy encoder utilises Reed-Solomon encoding.

4. A tag encoder as claimed in claim 1 wherein tags are placed regularly on a page.

5. A tag encoder as claimed in claim 4 wherein tags are placed in a triangular grid.
