Abstract

In some embodiments, an extragastric balloon is described in which the balloon is contoured to fit a portion of the stomach but not circumscribe the stomach. In some embodiments, the extragastric balloon comprises multiple material components. In some embodiments, the extragastric balloon comprises multiple inflateable compartments. In some embodiments, the extragastric balloon is filled with one or more of a gas, liquid, solid, or foams to create portions of the balloon with differing densities or buoyancies. In some embodiments, multiple anchors contact the stomach, each of which are inflateable with a fluid such as a liquid, gas, or gel. In some embodiments, a pressure sensor is described which is programmable from a place external to the patient and can be programmed to increase its sampling frequency when an ingestion event is detected.

Claims

1. A method for treating obesity in a subject comprising:

implanting, with respect to a gastrointestinal tract, a restriction device with a sensor configured to detect and store data signals indicative of ingestion and comprising a gain control to control the output of the sensor relative to the pressure changes;

adjusting the sensitivity of said sensor so that an input signal of the ingestion is detectable over a signal in the non-ingestion state.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

wirelessly downloading the stored data, relative to the gain control, to a module outside the subject, and adjusting said gain based on said downloaded data.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending a signal to the subject.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the signal communicates with the restriction device or attached component therein.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said device is a circumferential restriction device.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said device is a non-circumferential restriction device.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said device is a trans-gastric restriction device.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

programming the sensor to detect signals indicative of ingestion and when an ingestion signal is detected at a rate of greater than 1 per second, increasing the frequency of detection of the ingestion signals.

9. The method of claim 3 wherein said signal to the subject is a signal to an implanted gastric stimulator.

10. A system for detecting ingestion signals in a gastrointestinal tract comprising:

a device configured to create restriction in a gastrointestinal organ;

a pressure sensor adapted to be implanted in hydraulic continuity with the restriction device and adapted to receive signals and trasmit signals;

a gain adjust within the pressure sensor circuit to adjust the gain within the circuit;

a power supply adapted to be implanted with the pressure sensor.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein said device is a circumferential restriction device.

12. The system of claim 10 wherein said device is a non-circumferential restriction device.

13. The system of claim 10 further comprising:

a memory circuit, adapted to sample and record pressure at a rate of at least 1 Hz.

14. The system of claim 10 further comprising:

an algorithm wherein said pressure sensor samples pressure less than a defined frequency and when a signal above a threshold is detected, samples pressure at greater than a defined frequency.

15. The system of claim 10 wherein said gain adjust is adapted to be programmable through a wireless signal transmittable through the skin of a patient.

16. The system of claim 10 wherein said pressure sensor is surrounded by a fluid to protect the pressure sensor from degradation and communicates with the fluid used to adjust the restriction device by a diaphragm.

17. The system of claim 10 further comprising an output signal configured to induce satiety in a patient.
