Abstract

A computer output display system is provided. The system includes a layout component to determine one or more rendering rules that are applicable to a subset of display output controls. A format component communicates the rendering rules via a generic protocol that is employed by the subset of display output controls to render a display.

Claims

1. A computer output display system, comprising:

a layout component to determine one or more layout or pagination rules that are applicable to a set of display output controls; and

a format component to communicate data as a result of applying the layout or pagination rules to a subset of the display output controls, the data associated with a generic protocol to render a display.

2. The system of claim 1, the layout component generates a stream or an object model that supports an in memory configuration or a client/server configuration.

3. The system of claim 2, the object model is layered on top of the stream and populated incrementally.

4. The system of claim 2, the client server configuration references resources via metadata in the stream.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising metadata that describes end-user actions.

6. The system of claim 5, further comprising a component to support a non-predefined visual sort operation.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising metadata that links rendered objects to an original data definition.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising a configurable pagination module to facilitate graphical rendering.

9. The system of claim 8, the configurable pagination module is associated with rendering targets having hard physical page limits, soft physical page limits, or where all pages are rendered concurrently.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising a component to perform single pass to limit memory usage and optimize server performance.

11. The system of claim 1, further comprising a generic protocol including one or more internal pointers to facilitate scaling between memory intensive calculations or processing intensive calculations.

12. The system of claim 1, further comprising a component to determine to configure whether size calculations are performed on a server or a client.

13. The system of claim 1, the generic protocol is a Report Page Layout (RPL) stream or an RPL Object Model.

14. The system of claim 13, the RPL stream includes an RPL stream structure and an RPL stream structure semantic.

15. The system of claim 13, the RPL stream includes an item properties stream, an image properties stream, an action information properties stream, a style properties stream, a tablix measurements stream, or a tablix cell properties stream.

16. A method for rendering graphical data, comprising:

generating a report definition;

retrieving data

applying layout and pagination rules to the data, according to instructions from the report definition; and

generating a target-independent format to render a display.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising generating a remote request to render at least one page.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising generating a stream or an object model in response to the remote request.

19. The method of claim 18, generating metadata for the stream or the object model.

20. A graphical display system, comprising:

means for determining graphical rules to drive a remote output device; and

means for communicating the graphical rules according to a generic protocol, where the generic protocol can be employed as input for a set of output control components.
