Abstract

The present invention relates to a media transmission and reception system that is implemented, in the form of programs stored in a satellite device having a memory, an input mechanism for receiving commands from a user, and a transceiver capable of wirelessly accessing a network, and in a computing device having a memory and a transceiver capable of accessing a network. The program stored in the memory of the satellite device causes user commands to be processed, causes the satellite device to connect to the computing device through the network, and causes the satellite device to transmit command instructions, derived from the commands, to the computing device through the network. The program stored in the memory of the computing device causes the computing device to access media stored in a memory, causes the computing device to process the media, captures the processed media, compresses the media, and causes the computing device to transmit the compressed media to the satellite device. The media access, media processing, media compression, and media transmission occurs in real-time and in response to the command instructions.

Claims

1. In a media transmission and reception system with a satellite device having a memory, an input mechanism for receiving commands from a user, and a transceiver capable of wirelessly accessing an IP network, and with a computing device having a memory and a transceiver capable of accessing an IP network, programs comprising:

a. a plurality of routines stored in the memory of said satellite device wherein said routines, when executed by a processor of said satellite device, causes the commands to be processed, causes the satellite device to connect to the computing device through said IP network, and causes the satellite device to transmit command instructions, derived from said commands, to said computing device through said IP network; and

b. a plurality of routines stored in the memory of said computing device wherein said routines, when executed by a processor of said computing device, causes the computing device to access media stored in a memory, causes the computing device to process said media, captures said processed media, compresses said media, and causes the computing device to transmit said compressed media to the satellite device, wherein said media access, media processing, media compression, and media transmission occurs in real-time and response to said command instructions.

2. The programs of claim 1 wherein said satellite device is at least one of a cellular phone or personal data assistant.

3. The programs of claim 2 wherein said computing device is at least one of a personal computer, server, or laptop.

4. The programs of claim 1 wherein said memory storing the media is remote from the computing device.

5. The programs of claim 4 wherein the computing device access the media stored in the memory through the IP network.

6. The programs of claim 1 wherein the plurality of routines stored in the memory of said computing device captures said processed media, wherein said media comprises at least audio data and video data, by capturing said video data from a mirror display driver and by capturing said audio data from an input source.

The programs of claim 1 wherein the plurality of routines stored in the memory of said computing device captures said processed media, wherein said media comprises at least audio data and video data, by capturing said video data from a buffer after said video data has been processed and prior to said processed video data being rendered to a display.

The programs of claim 1 wherein the programs further comprise a routine stored in the memory of said computing device wherein said routine, when executed by a processor of said computing device, encodes said media after said media has been processed and captured and before said media is transmitted to the satellite device.

9. The programs of claim 8 wherein the programs further comprise a routine stored in the memory of said satellite device wherein said routine, when executed by a processor of said computing device, decodes said media after said media has been received from said computing device.

The programs of claim 1 wherein the plurality of routines stored in the memory of said computing device causes the computing device to transmit said compressed media, wherein said media comprises at least video data, to the satellite device by establishing a connection with the satellite device using TCP and transmitting packets of video data using UDP.

11. The programs of claim 1 wherein the plurality of routines stored in the memory of said computing device, when executed by a processor of said computing device, applies a CODEC to the media, wherein the media at least has video data, that has been captured and processed by the computing device.

12. The programs of claim 11 wherein said CODEC removes temporal redundancy from said video data using motion estimation.

13. The programs of claim 11 wherein said CODEC converts a frame of video data into x*y blocks of pixels using a DCT block, wherein x is equal to y.

14. The programs of claim 11 wherein said CODEC codes video data into shorter words using a VLC coding circuit.

15. The programs of claim 11 wherein said CODEC converts back spatial frequencies of the video data into the pixel domain using an IDCT block.

16. The programs of claim 11 wherein said CODEC comprises a rate control mechanism for speeding up the transmission of media.

17. A method for accessing and transmitting media between a computing device having a memory and a transceiver capable of accessing a network and a satellite device having a memory, an input mechanism for receiving commands from a user, and a transceiver capable of wirelessly accessing a network, the method comprising the steps of:

a. providing a program that is stored in the memory of said satellite device wherein said program, when executed by a processor of said satellite device, causes the commands to be processed, causes the satellite device to connect to the computing device through said network, and causes the satellite device to transmit command instructions, derived from said commands, to said computing device through said network; and

b. providing a program that is stored in the memory of said computing device wherein said program, when executed by a processor of said computing device, causes the computing device to access media stored in a memory, causes the computing device to process said media, captures said processed media, compresses said media, and causes the computing device to transmit said compressed media to the satellite device, wherein said media access, media processing, media compression, and media transmission occurs in real-time and response to said command instructions.

The method of claim 17 wherein the program stored in the memory of said computing device captures said processed media, wherein said media comprises at least audio data and video data, by capturing said video data from a mirror display driver and by capturing said audio data from an input source.

The method of claim 17 wherein the program stored in the memory of said computing device captures said processed media, wherein said media comprises at least audio data and video data, by capturing said video data from a buffer after said video data has been processed and prior to said processed video data being rendered to a display.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the program stored in the memory of said computing device, when executed by a processor of said computing device, applies a CODEC to the media, wherein the media at least has video data, that has been captured and processed by the computing device.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein said CODEC removes temporal redundancy from said video data using motion estimation.
