Abstract

A sideshade for reducing peripheral glare that is removably attachable to a temple of spectacles such that the wearer of the spectacles is not required to remove the spectacles in order to attach the sideshade to or detach the sideshade from the temple of the spectacles. The detachable sideshade is optical or near-optical quality so as not to degrade the wearer'"'"'s peripheral vision. The sideshade may be light in weight and easy to attach and remove.

Claims

1. A detachable sideshade, comprising:

a detachable sideshade removably securable to a temple of spectacles such that a wearer is not required to remove said spectacles in order to attach said sideshade to or detach said sideshade from said temple of said spectacles; and

wherein said detachable sideshade is optical or near-optical quality such that said sideshade does not degrade or distort details in the peripheral viewing area of said wearer.

2. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade is constructed of a thin, flexible film or plastic.

3. The detachable sideshade of claim 2 wherein said film sideshade has a thickness between 100 and 200 μ

m

4. The detachable sideshade of claim 2 wherein said plastic sideshade has a thickness between 150 and 300 μ

m.

5. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade is unitary in construction.

6. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade is a two-part sideshade.

7. The detachable sideshade of claim 6 wherein said sideshade is constructed of a rigid or semi-rigid plastic having a thickness between 250 and 1000 μ

m.

8. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade includes a tapered channel for receipt of said temple of said spectacles, wherein said channel includes a cylindrical section.

9. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade includes a clasp mechanism to removably secure said sideshade to said spectacles.

10. The detachable sideshade of claim 9 wherein said clasp mechanism includes a tensioning spring, a pair of tabs capable of movement to selectively tension said spring and clasps that releasably secure said sideshade to said temple of said spectacles.

11. The detachable sideshade of claim 9 wherein said clasp mechanism includes at least one lever capable of movement, a spiral shaft having at least one movable clasp and at least one stationary clasp attached, and a compression spring that forces said lever into a closed position;

wherein movement of said lever causes said spiral shaft to rotate resulting in said moveable clasp moving close to or away from said temple of said spectacles.

12. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade includes a cutout area near a front portion.

13. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade includes an overturned area near a front portion that is generally arcuate to conform to the frame of said spectacles.

14. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade is tinted having a neutral filter category number range between 2 and 6 (transmittance between 25% and 1.56%).

15. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said sideshade includes vignetted tinting, either in the vertical or horizontal direction, a color tinting, photochromic, polarization, UV protection, or a combination thereof.

16. The detachable sideshade of claim 1 wherein said wearer is a pilot and said spectacles include specially tinted lenses having at least two distinct, contrasting tintings between at least three fields of vision;

a far field of vision tinted sufficient to prevent the high illumination from entering said pilot'"'"'s eyes;

an intermediate field of vision tinted to enable said pilot to easily see a dimly illuminated instrument panel; and

a near field of vision tinted to enable said pilot to easily view maps and other information.

17. A detachable sideshade, comprising:

a detachable sideshade removably securable to a temple of spectacles such that a wearer is not required to remove said spectacles in order to attach said sideshade to or detach said sideshade from said temple of said spectacles;

wherein said detachable sideshade is optical or near-optical quality such that said sideshade does not degrade or distort details in the peripheral viewing area of said wearer; and

wherein said sideshade is tinted having a neutral filter category number range between 2 and 6 (transmittance between 25% and 1.56%).

18. The detachable sideshade of claim 17 wherein said sideshade includes a tapered channel for receipt of said temple of said spectacles, wherein said channel includes a cylindrical section.

19. The detachable sideshade of claim 17 further comprising an overturned area near a front portion of said sideshades that is generally arcuate to conform to the frame of said spectacles;

20. The detachable sideshade of claim 17 wherein said sideshade includes a clasp mechanism to removably secure said sideshade to said spectacles.

21. The detachable sideshade of claim 20 wherein said clasp mechanism includes a tensioning spring, a pair of tabs capable of movement to selectively tension said spring, and clasps that releasably secure said sideshade to said temple of said spectacles.

22. The detachable sideshade of claim 20 wherein said clasp mechanism includes at least one lever capable of movement, a spiral shaft having at least one movable clasp and at least one stationary clasp attached, and a compression spring that forces said lever into a closed position;

wherein movement of said lever causes said spiral shaft to rotate resulting in said moveable clasp moving close to or away from said temple of said spectacles,

23. The detachable sideshade of claim 17 wherein said sideshade includes a cutout area near a front portion and an overturned area near a front portion that is generally arcuate to conform to the frame of said spectacles.

24. The detachable sideshade of claim 17 wherein said sideshade includes vignetted tinting, either in the vertical or horizontal direction, a color tinting, photochromic, polarization, UV protection, or a combination thereof.

25. The detachable sideshade of claim 17 wherein said wearer is a pilot and said spectacles include specially tinted lenses having at least two distinct, contrasting tintings between at least three fields of vision;

a far field of vision tinted sufficient to prevent the high illumination from entering said pilot'"'"'s eyes;

an intermediate field of vision tinted to enable said pilot to easily see a dimly illuminated instrument panel; and

a near field of vision tinted to enable said pilot to easily view maps and other information.
