Abstract
A surgical instrument for the dissection of bone and other tissue includes a spindle, a dissection tool and an coupler disposed between the spindle and the dissection tool. The coupler includes a tool collet and an attachment locking mechanism operable to permit tool collet operation and telescoping movement of an attachment tube with respect to the dissection tool. A method is also provided for convenient coupling of the dissection tool and adjustment of the attachment tube length.

42. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a coupling assembly removably engaged with a motor assembly, the coupling assembly comprising an axial bore extending from a proximal portion of the coupling assembly to a distal portion of the coupling assembly along a longitudinal axis and comprising an attachment locking assembly adjacent the distal portion; a tool-coupling assembly positioned at least partially within the axial bore of the coupling assembly; an attachment tube removably engaged with the attachment locking assembly of the coupling assembly and positioned at least partially within the axial bore of the coupling assembly, wherein in an unlocked state the attachment tube is movable with respect to the coupling assembly along the longitudinal axis, and wherein in a locked state the attachment tube is fixed with respect to the coupling assembly; and a working tool comprising a shaft with a distal working portion and a proximal coupling portion, the working tool extending through the attachment tube and the axial bore of the coupling assembly such that the proximal portion of the working tool is removably engaged with the tool-coupling assembly. - View Dependent Claims (43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56)

57. A method of assembling a surgical dissection instrument, comprising:

providing a motor assembly with a first tool chuck; providing a coupling assembly with a work shaft and a second tool chuck; providing an attachment tube; providing a dissection tool having a distal working portion and a proximal coupling portion; securing the coupling assembly to the motor assembly by engaging the work shaft with the first tool chuck; inserting the attachment tube into an axial bore of the coupling assembly to movably couple the attachment tube to the coupling assembly; inserting the proximal portion of the dissection tool through the attachment and into the second tool chuck; and locking the proximal portion of the dissection tool in the second tool chuck. - View Dependent Claims (58, 59, 60, 61)
