Abstract

Methods and systems are disclosed of enrolling a customer to perform an action. A first piece of information is received at an authentication processor from an over-the-air processor. The first piece of information was provided to the over-the-air processor by the customer from a mobile electronic device. A second piece of information is received at the authentication processor from a server different from the over-the-air processor. The second piece of information was provided to the server by the customer. The first and second pieces of information are associated by the authentication processor to enroll the customer.

Claims

1. A method of enrolling a customer to perform an action, the method comprising:

receiving a first piece of information at an authentication processor from an over-the-air processor, the first piece of information having been provided to the over-the-air processor by the customer from a mobile electronic device;

receiving a second piece of information at the authentication processor from a server different from the over-the-air processor, the second piece of information having been provided to the server by the customer; and

associating the first and second pieces of information by the authentication processor to enroll the customer.

2. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the action comprises a financial transaction.

3. The method recited in claim 2 wherein:

the second piece of information comprises an account number of a financial account; and

the first piece of information comprises a personal identification number associated with the financial account.

4. The method recited in claim 2 wherein:

the second piece of information comprises an identification number extracted from a presentation instrument;

the first piece of information comprises a personal identification number associated with the financial account; and

the method further comprises translating the identification number to an account number of the financial account.

5. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the mobile electronic device comprises a cellular telephone.

6. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the server comprises an Internet web server.

7. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the over-the-air processor comprises a voice response unit that initiates a communications connection with the mobile electronic device.

8. A method of authenticating a login for a session or a financial transaction between a customer and an Internet web site, the method comprising:

providing identification information by the customer to an Internet web server managed by the Internet web site;

receiving a one-time password by the customer, wherein the one-time password is provided by a mobile electronic device or by a contactless presentation instrument;

providing the one-time password by the customer to the Internet web server; and

permitting an action to be taken by the customer with the Internet web server.

9. The method recited in claim 8 wherein receiving the one-time password comprises entering information by the customer into the mobile electronic device or contactless presentation instrument.

10. The method recited in claim 9 wherein the information comprises a personal identification number associated with a financial account used to support the financial transaction.

11. The method recited in claim 8 wherein the identification information comprises an identifier of the customer used to support the transactions on the web site.

12. The method recited in claim 11 wherein the identifier comprises a user identifier or login account name of the customer.

13. The method recited in claim 11 wherein the identifier comprises an identification number extracted from a presentation instrument, the method further comprising translating the identification number to an account number of the financial account.

14. The method recited in claim 8 wherein the one-time password comprises a two-factor one-time password.

15. The method recited in claim 8 wherein the one-time password is a second one-time password provided to the customer by the mobile electronic device or contactless presentation instrument after passage of an expiry time after a first one-time password is provided to the customer by the mobile electronic device or contactless presentation instrument.

16. The method recited in claim 8 wherein the mobile electronic device comprises a cellular telephone.

17. The method recited in claim 8 wherein the identifier provided by the customer is the user identifier of the customer at the Internet web site.

18. A computer-readable storage medium having a computer-readable program embodied therein for directing operation of an authentication processor to enroll a customer to perform an action, the authentication processor including a communications system, a processor, and a storage device, wherein the computer-readable program includes:

instructions for receiving a first piece of information at the authentication processor from an over-the-air processor, the first piece of information having been provided to the over-the-air processor by the customer from a mobile electronic device;

instructions for receiving a second piece of information at the authentication process from a server different from the over-the-air processor, the second piece of information having been provided to the server by the customer; and

instructions for associating the first and second pieces of information by the authentication processor to enroll the customer.

19. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 18 wherein the action comprises a financial transaction.

20. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 19 wherein:

the second piece of information comprises an account number of a financial account; and

the first piece of information comprises a personal identification number associated with the financial account.

21. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 19 wherein:

the second piece of information comprises an identification number extracted from a presentation instrument;

the first piece of information comprises a personal identification number associated with the financial account; and

the computer-readable program further includes instructions for translating the identification number to an account number of the financial account.

22. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 18 wherein the mobile electronic device comprises a cellular telephone.

23. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 18 wherein the server comprises an Internet web server.

24. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 18 wherein the over-the-air processor comprises a voice response unit that initiates a communications connection with the mobile electronic device.
