Abstract

A backlight assembly includes: a light emitting unit having a plurality of unit LEDs formed in a matrix, each of the unit LEDs having a red LED, a green LED, and a blue LED; a plurality of bottom reflectors disposed under the respective unit LEDs; and a plurality of side reflectors disposed around the respective unit LEDs.

Claims

1. A backlight assembly comprising:

a light emitting unit including a plurality of unit LEDs formed in a matrix, each of the unit LEDs having at least one red LED, at least one green LED, and at least one blue LED;

bottom reflectors disposed under the unit LEDs; and

side reflectors disposed around the unit LEDs.

2. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein each of the unit LEDs includes one red LED, one green LED, and one blue LED.

3. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein a reflective surface of a selected side reflector has one of a polygonal shape, a circular shape, and an oval shape.

4. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein a reflective surface of at least one of a selected side reflector and a selected bottom reflector is embossed.

5. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein the side reflectors and the bottom reflectors are formed in one body.

6. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, further comprising a diffusion sheet disposed above the light emitting unit.

7. The backlight assembly according to claim 6, wherein light reflected from the diffusion sheet is again reflected from the side reflector and the bottom reflector and is again incident on the diffusion sheet.

8. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein light emitted from the unit LEDs is white light.

9. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein the LEDs have an orientation angle larger than 80 degrees.

10. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein each of the unit LEDs formed in the light emitting unit is one of a 1 in 1 square type unit LED, a 1 in 1 line type unit LED, a 3 in 1 COB type unit LED, a 4 in 1 COB type unit LED, a 3 in 3 COB type unit LED, and a 4 in 4 COB type unit LED.

11. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein an end portion of the side reflectors of adjacent unit LEDs has one of a concave shape, a recessed shape, a planar shape, a semicircular shape, and an oval shape.

12. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, wherein the bottom reflectors and the side reflectors are coated for diffusion and reflection.

13. The backlight assembly according to claim 1, further comprising a lens attached on respective unit LEDs so that light is emitted laterally.

14. A backlight assembly comprising:

a plurality of unit LEDs;

bottom reflectors formed under the unit LEDs;

side reflectors formed at boundaries of the unit LEDs; and

a diffusion sheet supported by the side reflectors.

15. The backlight assembly according to claim 14, wherein an end portion of the side reflectors of adjacent unit LEDs has one of a concave shape, a recessed shape, a planar shape, a semicircular shape, and an oval shape.

16. The backlight assembly according to claim 14, wherein each of the unit LEDs has at least one red LED, at least one green LED, and at least one blue LED.

17. The backlight assembly according to claim 14, wherein a reflective surface of at least one of a selected side reflector and a selected bottom reflector is embossed.

18. The backlight assembly according to claim 14, wherein a region where light from the adjacent unit LEDs are overlapped is formed above the diffusion sheet.

19. A display device comprising:

a backlight assembly including;

a light emitting unit including a plurality of unit LEDs formed in a matrix, each of the unit LEDs having at least one red LED, at least one green LED, and at least one blue LED;

bottom reflectors disposed under the respective unit LEDs; and

side reflectors disposed around the unit LEDs; and

a panel for receiving light emitted from the backlight assembly.

20. The display device according to claim 19, wherein the backlight assembly further comprises a diffusion sheet supported by the side reflectors.
