Abstract

Aspects of an infrastructure offload wake on wireless LAN (WOWL) are described. An aspect of the system may include a networked device, or station, which may communicate one or more filters to an infrastructure networking device. The infrastructure networking device may utilize the filters to perform pattern matching operations on frames or packets received from the network for delivery to at least the station while the station is in an inactive, or low-power, state. When pattern matching operations performed at the infrastructure networking device indicate receipt of a frame or packet on behalf of the inactive station, which matches at least one of the filters, the infrastructure networking device may store an indication value. The indication value may denote receipt of at least one frame or packet that matched at least one of the filters, which were communicated to the infrastructure networking device by the station.

Claims

1. A system for communicating data, the system comprising:

one or more circuits that enable reception of, via a network, one or more protocol data units at an infrastructure networking device, wherein said received one or more protocol data units are destined for a destination station device and said infrastructure networking device enables said destination station device to communicate with said destination station device and other station devices via said network; and

said one or more circuits enable generation of, at said infrastructure networking device, one or more indication values based on pattern matching each of said one or more protocol data units to each of said one or more filtering patterns, when said destination station device is sleeping.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein said one or more circuits enable generation of said one or more filtering patterns based on one or more filtering descriptions.

3. The system according to claim 2, wherein said one or more circuits enable reception of said one or more filtering descriptions from said destination station device.

4. The system according to claim 1, wherein said one or more circuits enable setting of each of said one or more indication values to an initial value.

5. The system according to claim 4, wherein said one or more circuits enable association between each of said one or more indication values and at least one of said one or more filtering patterns.

The system according to claim 1, wherein said one or more circuits enable setting of said each of said one or more indication values to an indication value when a pattern match is detected between at least one of said associated said at least one of said one or more filtering patterns and at least one of said one or more protocol data units.

7. The system according to claim 6, wherein said one or more circuits enable storage of one or both of:

said at least one or more of said one or more protocol data units; and

descriptive data for said at least one or more of said one or more protocol data units.

8. The system according to claim 1, wherein said one or more circuits enable transmission of current values for said one or more indication values to said destination station device.

9. A system for communicating data, the system comprising:

one or more circuits that enable transmission of one or more filtering descriptions from a destination station device to an infrastructure networking device via a network;

said one or more circuits enable reception of one or more indication values via said network from said infrastructure networking device; and

said one or more circuits enable configuration of an operating mode for said destination station device based on said received one or more indication values, wherein;

said received one or more indication values are based on said transmitted one or more filtering descriptions; and

said destination station does not receive data via said network between a time instant of said transmitting and a time instant of said receiving.

10. The system according to claim 9, wherein said one or more circuits enable transmission of a notification to said infrastructure networking device that notifies said infrastructure networking device that said destination station device is not currently receiving data via said network.

11. The system according to claim 9, wherein said one or more circuits enable reception of descriptive data associated with said one or more indication values.

12. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits enable transmission of a notification to said infrastructure networking device that notifies said infrastructure networking device that said destination station device is currently receiving data via said network based on one or both of:

said received one or more indication values; and

said received descriptive data.

13. A method for communicating data, the method comprising:

receiving via a network, one or more protocol data units at an infrastructure networking device, wherein said received one or more protocol data units are destined for a destination station device and said infrastructure networking device enables said destination station device to communicate with said destination station device and other station devices via said network; and

generating at said infrastructure networking device, one or more indication values based on pattern matching each of said one or more protocol data units to each of said one or more filtering patterns, when said destination station device is sleeping.

14. wherein The method according to claim 13, comprising generating said one or more filtering patterns based on one or more filtering descriptions.

15. The method according to claim 14, comprising receiving said one or more filtering descriptions from said destination station device.

16. The method according to claim 13, comprising setting each of said one or more indication values to an initial value.

17. The method according to claim 16, comprising associating each of said one or more indication values and at least one of said one or more filtering patterns.

18. The method according to claim 13, comprising setting said each of said one or more indication values to an indication value when a pattern match is detected between at least one of said associated said at least one of said one or more filtering patterns and at least one of said one or more protocol data units.

19. The method according to claim 18, comprising storing one or both of:

said at least one or more of said one or more protocol data units; and

descriptive data for said at least one or more of said one or more protocol data units.

20. The method according to claim 13, comprising transmitting current values for said one or more indication values to said destination station device.

21. A method for communicating data, the method comprising:

transmitting one or more filtering descriptions from a destination station device to an infrastructure networking device via a network;

receiving one or more indication values via said network from said infrastructure networking device; and

configuring an operating mode for said destination station device based on said received one or more indication values, wherein;

said received one or more indication values are based on said transmitted one or more filtering descriptions; and

said destination station does not receive data via said network between a time instant of said transmitting and a time instant of said receiving.

22. The method according to claim 21, comprising transmitting a notification to said infrastructure networking device that notifies said infrastructure networking device that said destination station device is not currently receiving data via said network.

23. The method according to claim 21, comprising receiving descriptive data associated with said one or more indication values.

24. The method according to claim 23, comprising transmitting a notification to said infrastructure networking device that notifies said infrastructure networking device that said destination station device is currently receiving data via said network based on one or both of:

said received one or more indication values; and

said received descriptive data.
