Abstract

The present invention relates to injectable compositions comprising biocompatible, swellable, substantially hydrophilic, non-toxic and substantially spherical polymeric material carriers which are capable of efficiently delivering bioactive therapeutic factor(s) for use in embolization drug therapy. The present invention further relates to methods of embolization gene therapy, particularly for the treatment of angiogenic and non-angiogenic-dependent diseases, using the injectable compositions.

Claims

1. A method of reducing the blood supply to an organ of the body to treat a disease, comprising administering a substantially spherical, hydrophilic microsphere comprising an acrylamide, acrylate, or acrylic polymer, and a drug to said organ.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said microsphere comprises a biocompatible sodium acrylate and vinyl alcohol copolymer.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the organ is the prostate.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the disease is hyperplasia.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the hyperplasia is nodular hyperplasia.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the hyperplasia is benign.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the diameter of the microsphere ranges from 10 μ

m to 2000 μ

m.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said microsphere appears smooth under magnification of up to 1000 times.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the microsphere is swellable.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the drug is selected from the group consisting of an antibiotic, a local anesthetic agent, and a hormone.

11. A method of embolization of an organ, comprising administering a substantially spherical, hydrophilic microsphere comprising an acrylamide, acrylate, or acrylic polymer;

and a drug to said organ.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein said microsphere comprises a biocompatible sodium acrylate and vinyl alcohol copolymer.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the organ is the prostate.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the disease is hyperplasia.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the hyperplasia is nodular hyperplasia.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the hyperplasia is benign.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the diameter of the microsphere ranges from 10 μ

m to 2000 μ

m.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the treatment is temporary.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the treatment is permanent.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein said microsphere appears smooth under magnification of up to 1000 times.

21. The method of claim 11, wherein the microsphere is swellable.

22. The method of claim 11, wherein the drug is selected from the group consisting of an antibiotic, a local anesthetic agent, and a hormone.
