Abstract

A medical device includes a radiation source assembly having at least two radiation sources, where one or more of the radiation sources is adapted to generate an imaging beam for use in visualization of a scene and one or more of the radiation sources is adapted to generate a therapeutic beam for treatment of a medical condition. An optical fiber for directing radiation energy from the radiation source assembly toward a distal end of the medical device in the form of a beam. A reflector that receives the beam from the optical fiber, the reflector configured to direct the beam onto a field-of-view. A receiving system including a detector arranged and configured to receive radiation from the field-of-view to generate a viewable image. The imaging beam and the therapeutic beam are directed to follow a common path from the at least two radiation sources to the reflector.

Claims

1. A medical device comprising:

a radiation source assembly having at least two radiation sources, where one or more of the radiation sources is adapted to generate an imaging beam for use in visualization of a scene and one or more of the radiation sources is adapted to generate a therapeutic beam for treatment of a medical condition;

an optical fiber for directing radiation energy from the radiation source assembly toward a distal end of the medical device in the form of a beam;

a reflector that receives the beam from the optical fiber, the reflector configured to direct the beam onto a field-of-view; and

a receiving system including a detector arranged and configured to receive radiation from the field-of-view to generate a viewable image;

wherein the imaging beam and the therapeutic beam from the at least two radiation sources are directed to follow a common path to the reflector.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the reflector oscillates at a natural resonant frequency in at least one axis.

3. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the therapeutic beam is generated based on user specification of at least one target region.

4. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising a controller that modulates sensitivity of the receiving system with delivery of the therapeutic beam to inhibit overload.

5. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the optical fiber is arranged and configured to receive an imaging beam and a therapeutic beam generated by the at least two radiation sources.

6. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising an image processor that generates a video image stream based on electrical signals generated by the detector that correspond to the radiation received by the detector from the field-of-view.

7. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising a display device for displaying a video image of the field-of-view to a user.

8. The medical device of claim 7, wherein the displayed video image is manipulated to illustrate a selected treatment region.

9. The medical device of claim 7 further comprising a motion sensing system including a motion sensor for use in detecting relative movement between the motion sensor and the field-of-view.

10. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the optical fiber is a single mode fiber.

11. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the radiation source assembly is configured to output an aiming beam to highlight an area of the field-of-view.

12. A method of providing medical treatment, the method comprising:

outputting an imaging beam using a first radiation source;

outputting a therapeutic beam using a second radiation source;

directing the imaging beam onto the field-of-view for generating a viewable image thereof using a reflector; and

directing the therapeutic beam onto at least a portion of the field-of view based on specification of a target region.

13. The method of claim 12 comprising outputting the therapeutic beam only when the reflector addresses the target region in the field-of-view.

14. The method of claim 12 further comprising directing the imaging beam and the therapeutic beam from the first radiation source and the second radiation source, respectively, to the reflector using a single mode fiber.

15. The method of claim 12 further comprising selecting the target region of the field-of-view based on user specification of a treatment zone.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising defining the target region by mapping the user specified treatment zone to the field-of-view.

17. The method of claim 12 further comprising selecting the target region automatically by identifying a fluorescent material.

18. The method of claim 12 further comprising performing a photodynamic therapy, dermal treatment, thermal ablation or opto-thermal shock wave treatment by directing the therapeutic beam onto at least a portion of the field-of view.

19. The method of claim 12 further comprising directing an aiming beam onto the field-of-view, the radiation source configured to generate the aiming beam.

20. A medical device comprising:

a radiation source assembly configured to output an imaging beam and a therapeutic beam;

an optical fiber for directing at least one of the imaging beam and therapeutic beam toward a distal end of the medical device;

a reflector that receives at least one of the imaging beam and the therapeutic beam from the optical fiber, the reflector configured to direct the at least one of the imaging beam and the therapeutic beam onto a field-of-view;

a receiving system including a detector configured to receive radiation from the field-of-view to generate a viewable image; and

a user input device that allows for selection of a target region within the field of view.

21. The medical device of claim 20 further comprising a controller that controls operation of the radiation source such that a therapeutic beam is provided only within the target region.
