Abstract

Biodegradable cross-linked particles, as well as related compositions and methods, are disclosed.

Claims

1. A particle, comprising:

a material comprising a polymer backbone bonded to a chemical species via a reaction product of at least two different functionalities,

wherein one of the at least two different functionalities comprises an azido functionality, and the particle has a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns.

2. The particle of claim 1, wherein one of the at least two different functionalities comprises an alkyne functionality.

3. The particle of claim 1, wherein the chemical species comprises a second polymer backbone.

4. The particle of claim 3, wherein the second functionality is covalently bonded to the second polymer backbone.

5. The particle of claim 4, wherein the first and second polymer backbones are cross-linked via the reaction product of the at least two different functionalities.

6. The particle of claim 1, wherein at least one of the functionalities comprises a multifunctional biodegradable oligomer.

7. The particle of claim 1, wherein the reaction product of the of at least two different functionalities is biodegradable.

8. The particle of claim 1, wherein the particle has pores.

9. The particle of claim 8, further comprising a therapeutic agent disposed in at least some of the pores of the particle.

10. The particle of claim 1, further comprising a therapeutic agent.

11. The particle of claim 10, wherein the therapeutic agent is covalently bonded to at least one of the functionalities.

12. The particle of claim 10, wherein the therapeutic agent is covalently bonded to the reaction product of the at least two different functionalities.

13. The particle of claim 2, wherein the first polymer backbone is the same as the second polymer backbone.

14. The particle of claim 1, wherein the first polymer backbone is selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, polyHEMAs, carbohydrates, polyethylene oxide/glycols, polyhydroxyethyl acrylates, poly(meth) acrylamides, PLA PGAs, polyacrylic acids, polymethacrylic acids, poly vinyl sulfonates, carboxymethyl celluloses, hydroxyethyl celluloses, substituted celluloses, polyacrylamides, polyethylene glycols, polyamides, polyureas, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyethers, polystyrenes, polysaccharides, polylactic acids, polyethylenes, polymethylmethacrylates, polycaprolactones, polyglycolic acids, and poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acids (e.g., poly(d-lactic-co-glycolic) acids).

15. The particle of claim 2, wherein both polymer backbones comprise polyvinyl alcohol.

16. The particle of claim 15, wherein one of the functionalities comprises an alkyne functionality.

17. A particle, comprising:

a material comprising a polymer backbone bonded to a chemical species via a reaction product of at least two different functionalities,

wherein one of the at least two different functionalities comprises an alkyne functionality, and the particle has a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns.

18. The particle of claim 17, wherein the chemical species comprises a second polymer backbone.

19. The particle of claim 18, wherein the second functionality is covalently bonded to the second polymer backbone.

20. The particle of claim 19, wherein the first and second polymer backbones are cross-linked via the reaction product of the at least two different functionalities.

21. The particle of claim 17, wherein at least one of the functionalities comprises a multifunctional biodegradable oligomer.

22. The particle of claim 17, wherein the reaction product of the of at least two different functionalities is biodegradable.

23. The particle of claim 17, wherein the particle has pores.

24. The particle of claim 23, further comprising a therapeutic agent disposed in at least some of the pores of the particle.

25. The particle of claim 17, further comprising a therapeutic agent.

26. The particle of claim 25, wherein the therapeutic agent is covalently bonded to at least one of the functionalities.

27. The particle of claim 25, wherein the therapeutic agent is covalently bonded to the reaction product of the at least two different functionalities.

28. The particle of claim 18, wherein the first polymer backbone is the same as the second polymer backbone.

29. The particle of claim 17, wherein the first polymer backbone is selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, polyHEMAs, carbohydrates, polyethylene oxide/glycols, polyhydroxyethyl acrylates, poly(meth) acrylamides, PLA PGAs, polyacrylic acids, polymethacrylic acids, poly vinyl sulfonates, carboxymethyl celluloses, hydroxyethyl celluloses, substituted celluloses, polyacrylamides, polyethylene glycols, polyamides, polyureas, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyethers, polystyrenes, polysaccharides, polylactic acids, polyethylenes, polymethylmethacrylates, polycaprolactones, polyglycolic acids, and poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acids (e.g., poly(d-lactic-co-glycolic) acids).

30. The particle of claim 18, wherein both polymer backbones comprise polyvinyl alcohol.

31. A particle, comprising:

a first polymer backbone;

a second polymer backbone; and

a reaction product of an azido functionality and an alkyne functionality,

wherein the reaction product is covalently bonded to the first and second polymer backbones to cross-link the first and second polymer backbones, and the particle has a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns.

32. A delivery device, comprising:

a delivery vessel configured to delivery a composition into a body lumen;

a polymer comprising a polymer backbone and a first functionality covalently bonded to the first polymer backbone; and

a chemical species comprising a second functionality,

wherein the polymer and the chemical species are in the delivery vessel, the first and second functionalities are different, and the first and second functionalities are capable of reacting to form a product that bonds the polymer and the chemical species.

38. A method, comprising:

providing a polymer comprising a polymer backbone and a first functionality;

providing a chemical species comprising a second functionality different from the first functionality; and

reacting the first and second functionalities to form a reaction product, thereby forming a material comprising the polymer backbone bonded to the chemical species via the reaction product of the first and second functionalities,

wherein the material is in the shape of a particle having a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns.

43. A method, comprising:

bonding a polymer and a chemical species in a body lumen to form a gel in the body lumen,

wherein the polymer comprises a backbone and a first functionality covalently bonded to the first backbone, the chemical species comprises a second functionality, and the polymer and the chemical species are bonded via a reaction product of the first and second functionalities.

45. A composition, comprising:

a carrier fluid; and

a plurality of particles in the carrier fluid,

wherein at least some of the plurality of particles have a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns and comprise a material comprising a polymer backbone bonded to a chemical species via a reaction product of at least two different functionalities, one of the at least two different functionalities comprising an azido functionality.

a carrier fluid; and

a plurality of particles in the carrier fluid,

wherein at least some of the plurality of particles have a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns and comprise a material comprising a polymer backbone bonded to a chemical species via a reaction product of at least two different functionalities, one of the at least two different functionalities comprising an alkyne functionality.

48. A composition, comprising:

a carrier fluid; and

a plurality of particles in the carrier fluid,

wherein at least some of the plurality of particles have a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns and comprise a material comprising a first polymer backbone cross-linked to a second polymer backbone via a reaction product of at least two different functionalities.

49. A composition, comprising:

a carrier fluid; and

a plurality of particles in the carrier fluid,

wherein at least some of the plurality of particles have a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns and comprise;

a polymer backbone;

a chemical species; and

a reaction product of an azido functionality and a second functionality, the reaction product being covalently bonded to the polymer backbone and the chemical species.

a carrier fluid; and

a plurality of particles in the carrier fluid,

wherein at least some of the plurality of particles have a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns and comprise;

a polymer backbone;

a chemical species; and

a reaction product of an alkyne functionality and a second functionality, the reaction product being covalently bonded to the polymer backbone and the chemical species.

52. A composition, comprising:

a carrier fluid; and

a plurality of particles in the carrier fluid,

wherein at least some of the plurality of particles have a maximum dimension of at most 5,000 microns and comprise;

a first polymer backbone;

a second polymer backbone; and

a reaction product of an azido functionality and an alkyne functionality, the reaction product being covalently bonded to the first and second polymer backbones to cross-link the first and second polymer backbones.
