Abstract

A system and method for automatically comparing obtained wireless device location information from a wireless network and comparing that location with another independent source geographic location is provided. Location information is derived from two or more sources in a multiplicity of ways and a comparison is made within a Location Comparison Engine. The Location Comparison Engine makes use of databases that assist in resolving obtained raw positioning information and converting that positioning information into one or more formats for adequate location comparison. Results of the location comparison are deduced to determine if the wireless device is in some proximity to some other activity source location. Other location information used for comparison may be obtained from a multiplicity of sources, such as another network based on some activity of the wireless device user, another wireless device via a wireless network, or any system capable of providing location information to the Location Comparison Engine.

Claims

1. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network comprising:

a module to obtain wireless device location information from a wireless network;

a module to obtain a wireless device user'"'"'s location from another data network;

a module to determine the proximity among wireless device locations with locations of wireless device users accessing other devices;

a module to evaluate the results of a comparison among wireless device locations with locations of wireless device users accessing other devices based on proximity of the compared locations.

2. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

a database is employed associating wireless device locations with locations of wireless device users using a common wireless device identifier;

3. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

a database is employed associating a wireless device location identified by a wireless device identifier with a location of an individual identified by another form of identifier.

4. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

a database is employed associating the date and time of an obtained wireless device location identified by a wireless device identifier with another date and time of an obtained wireless device location identified by a wireless device identifier.

5. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

the results of said comparison are used to validate an activity of a wireless device user.

6. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

the results of said comparison are used to invalidate an activity of a wireless device user.

7. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

said module to evaluate the results of said comparison applies an algorithmic value to the comparison results indicating a degree of validity or invalidity of an activity of a wireless device user.

8. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

the results of said comparison are used to validate a wireless device user'"'"'s identity.

9. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

the results of said comparison are used to invalidate a wireless device user'"'"'s identity.

10. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

the results of said comparison are sent to a results processing system where the results determine success or failure of a wireless device user'"'"'s activity.

11. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 1, wherein:

the results of said comparison are sent to a results processing system where the results may be used for an application to demonstrate the proximity of the wireless device user to another location.

12. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network comprising the steps of:

obtaining wireless device location from a wireless network;

obtaining wireless device user location from another data network;

associating said locations with each other in a database;

comparing said locations to determine proximity among said locations;

sending results of the comparison of said locations to a results processing system.

13. The method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 12, wherein:

a common wireless identifier is associated with said locations in said database.

14. The method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 12, wherein:

an algorithmic value is associated with said results of the comparison, based on proximity.

15. The method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 12, wherein:

the obtained wireless device location is associated with a geographic place in a database.

16. The method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 12, wherein:

the obtained wireless device user'"'"'s location is associated with a geographic place in a database.

17. An apparatus for comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network comprising:

means to obtain wireless device location from a wireless network;

means to obtain wireless device user location from another data network;

means to associate said locations with each other in a database;

means to compare said locations to determine proximity among said locations;

means to send results of the comparison of said locations to a results processing system.

18. The apparatus for comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 17, wherein:

a common wireless identifier is associated with said locations in said database.

19. The apparatus for comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 17, wherein:

an algorithmic value is associated with said results of the comparison, based on proximity.

20. The apparatus for comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 17, wherein:

the obtained wireless device location is associated with a geographic place in a database.

21. The apparatus for comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with the wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another network according to claim 17, wherein:

the obtained wireless device user'"'"'s location is associated with a geographic place in a database.

22. A method of comparing a wireless device'"'"'s location obtained from a wireless network with a wireless device user'"'"'s location obtained from another data network to mitigate a fraudulent activity comprising:

receiving location information for wireless device user in connection with a transaction attempted by a wireless device user from a data network;

sending a request to a wireless network of a wireless device of a wireless device user to obtain location information of the wireless device provided by the wireless device user'"'"'s wireless network;

receiving location information for a wireless device user'"'"'s wireless device from the wireless device user'"'"'s wireless network;

caching the wireless device location information of a wireless device user'"'"'s wireless device for comparison with the wireless device user'"'"'s location information obtained from a data network;

associating a date and time of the cached wireless device user'"'"'s wireless device location information with the wireless device location information;

comparing the cached wireless device'"'"'s location information with a wireless device user'"'"'s location information obtained from a data network;

evaluating the results of a comparison of the cached wireless device location information with a wireless device user'"'"'s location information obtained from a data network based on proximity of the compared locations;

applying an algorithmic value to the results indicating a relative degree of proximity of the location of a wireless device with the location of an activity performed by a wireless device user; and

sending the comparison to a results processing system where the results may be used by an application to assist in determining whether the wireless device user'"'"'s activity is valid or invalid.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein a database is employed associating wireless device locations with locations of wireless device users using a common wireless device identifier.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein a database is employed associating a wireless device location identified by a wireless device identifier with a location of an individual identified by another form of identifier.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein a database is employed associating the date and time of an obtained wireless device location identified by a wireless device identifier with another date and time of an obtained wireless device location identified by a wireless device identifier.

26. The method of claim 22, wherein results of the comparison are used to validate a wireless device user'"'"'s identity.

27. The method of claim 22, wherein results of the comparison are used to invalidate a wireless device user'"'"'s identity.

28. The method of claim 22, wherein results of the comparison are sent to a results processing system where the results may be used for an application to demonstrate the proximity of the wireless device user to another location.
