Abstract

A wireless handset or wireless headset includes a Bluetooth transceiver that is coupleable to an external Bluetooth compatible device, that sends the first audio data to the external Bluetooth compatible device and that receives the second audio data from the external Bluetooth compatible device. The Bluetooth transceiver includes a first integrated circuit that includes a memory module that stores a plurality of operational instructions for implementing a plurality of protocol layers of a Bluetooth protocol, a processing module that executes the plurality of operational instructions, and a first interface module. A second integrated circuit includes a second interface module that couples data to and from the first interface module, an RF transceiver that modulates a first baseband signal to produce a transmitted RF signal, and that demodulates a received RF signal to produce a second baseband signal, and a baseband module that generates the first baseband signal based on data received from the first interface module via the second interface module, and that generates data based on the second baseband signal to send to the first interface module via the second interface module.

Claims

1. A wireless handset comprising:

a long range wireless transceiver that communicates with a telephone network over a long range wireless communication path;

a telephony interface module, coupled to the long range transceiver, that sends and receives calls over the telephone network, the calls including first audio data generated in response to speech from a user of the wireless handset, and second audio data received over the telephone network;

a Bluetooth transceiver, coupled to the telephone interface module and coupleable to an external Bluetooth compatible device, that receives the first audio data from the external Bluetooth compatible device and that sends the second audio data to the external Bluetooth compatible device, the Bluetooth transceiver comprising;

a first integrated circuit that includes a memory module that stores a plurality of operational instructions for implementing a plurality of protocol layers of a Bluetooth protocol, a processing module that executes the plurality of operational instructions, and a first interface module;

a second integrated circuit that includes a second interface module that couples data to and from the first interface module, an RF transceiver that modulates a first baseband signal to produce a transmitted RF signal, and that demodulates a received RF signal to produce a second baseband signal, and a baseband module that generates the first baseband signal based on data received from the first interface module via the second interface module, and that generates data based on the second baseband signal to send to the first interface module via the second interface module.

2. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein first interface module operates in a master mode and the second interface module operates as a slave to the first interface module.

3. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the plurality of protocol layers include a plurality of upper stack layers of the Bluetooth protocol and a plurality of lower stack layers of the Bluetooth protocol.

4. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein first integrated circuit further comprises:

a direct memory access module that controls the communication of the data between the first integrated circuit and the second integrated circuit.

5. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the first interface module and the second interface module communicate the data via a serial communication path and wherein at least one of the first interface module and the second interface module include a synchronous receiver transmitter.

6. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the first integrated circuit further includes:

an oscillator module for producing a clock signal;

wherein the first interface couples the clock signal to the second interface and wherein the baseband module and the RF module operate based on the clock signal.

7. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the first integrated circuit further includes:

A DC to DC converter for producing a supply voltage;

wherein the first interface couples the supply voltage to the second interface and wherein the baseband module and the RF module operate based on the supply voltage.

8. The wireless handset of claim 7 wherein the second integrated circuit generates at least one additional supply voltage based on the supply voltage.

9. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the at least a portion of the RF module and the baseband module are implemented using a state machine.

10. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the memory module includes a random access memory.

11. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the first integrated circuit further includes:

a memory interface for interfacing to an off-chip memory device.

12. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the external device is an external Bluetooth compatible device includes a wireless headset.

13. The wireless handset of claim 1 wherein the second integrated circuit further includes:

an oscillator module for producing a clock signal;

wherein the second interface couples the clock signal to the first interface and wherein the processing module operates based on the clock signal.

14. A wireless headset comprising:

microphone;

a microphone driver that generates first audio data in response to speech from a user;

a speaker;

a speaker driver, coupled to the speaker, that drives the speaker in response to second audio data;

a Bluetooth transceiver, coupled to the speaker driver and the microphone driver and coupleable to an external Bluetooth compatible device, that sends the first audio data to the external Bluetooth compatible device and that receives the second audio data from the external Bluetooth compatible device, the Bluetooth transceiver comprising;

a first integrated circuit that includes a memory module that stores a plurality of operational instructions for implementing a plurality of protocol layers of a Bluetooth protocol, a processing module that executes the plurality of operational instructions, and a first interface module;

a second integrated circuit that includes a second interface module that couples data to and from the first interface module, an RF transceiver that modulates a first baseband signal to produce a transmitted RF signal, and that demodulates a received RF signal to produce a second baseband signal, and a baseband module that generates the first baseband signal based on data received from the first interface module via the second interface module, and that generates data based on the second baseband signal to send to the first interface module via the second interface module.

15. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein first interface module operates in a master mode and the second interface module operates as a slave to the first interface module.

16. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the plurality of protocol layers include a plurality of upper stack layers of the Bluetooth protocol and a plurality of lower stack layers of the Bluetooth protocol.

17. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein first integrated circuit further comprises:

a direct memory access module that controls the communication of the data between the first integrated circuit and the second integrated circuit.

18. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the first interface module and the second interface module communicate the data via a serial communication path and wherein at least one of the first interface module and the second interface module include a synchronous receiver transmitter.

19. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the first integrated circuit further includes:

an oscillator module for producing a clock signal;

wherein the first interface couples the clock signal to the second interface and wherein the baseband module and the RF module operate based on the clock signal.

20. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the first integrated circuit further includes:

A DC to DC converter for producing a supply voltage;

wherein the first interface couples the supply voltage to the second interface and wherein the baseband module and the RF module operate based on the supply voltage.

21. The wireless headset of claim 20 wherein the second integrated circuit generates at least one additional supply voltage based on the supply voltage.

22. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the at least a portion of the RF module and the baseband module are implemented using a state machine.

23. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the memory module includes a random access memory.

24. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the first integrated circuit further includes:

a memory interface for interfacing to an off-chip memory device.

25. The wireless headset of claim 14 wherein the external device is an external Bluetooth compatible device includes one of a wireless handset, a home audio system and a personal computer.

26. The wireless transceiver of claim 14 wherein the second integrated circuit further includes:

an oscillator module for producing a clock signal;

wherein the second interface couples the clock signal to the first interface and wherein the processing module operates based on the clock signal.
