Abstract

A viewing device is used with coded data on a surface. The device includes a sensor arrangement for sensing the coded data when the device is placed on the surface, and a processor in signal communication with the sensor arrangement. The processor is configured to decode the coded data. Also included is a transceiver for transmitting the decoded data to a computer system, and to subsequently receive a file pre-associated with the decoded data from the computer system. The device also includes a display configured to display the received file to a user.

Claims

1. A viewing device for use with coded data on a surface, said device comprising:

a sensor arrangement for sensing the coded data when the device is placed on the surface;

a processor in signal communication with the sensor arrangement, said processor configured to decode the coded data;

a transceiver for transmitting the decoded data to a computer system, and to subsequently receive a file pre-associated with the decoded data from the computer system; and

a display configured to display the received file to a user.

2. The viewing device of claim 1, wherein the sensor arrangement includes an optical sensor configured to detect infrared markings on the surface.

3. The viewing device of claim 2, wherein the optical sensor includes an infrared LED and an image sensor, the LED operatively emitting infrared light which is reflected from the surface and received through an optical guide directing such light onto the image sensor.

4. The viewing device of claim 3, wherein the processor is configured to strobe the LED in synchrony with an image capture of the image sensor to prevent motion-blurring of captured images.

5. The viewing device of claim 3, wherein the optical sensor includes a lens and a beam splitter/combiner to allow light reflected from and to the LED and the image sensor to follow the same path.

6. The viewing device of claim 3, wherein the image sensor includes a 200×

200 pixel CCD or CMOS image sensor with a near-infrared bandpass filter.

7. The viewing device of claim 1, wherein the transceiver supports any wireless transmission standard selected from the group consisting of:

Bluetooth/IEEE 802.15, IEEE 802.11, HomeRF/SWAP, HIPERLAN, and OpenAir.
