Abstract

A method for mounting an infusion set to an infusion site includes adhering an infuser base of the insertion set to an infusion site and inserting a cannula cartridge of the infusion set into an opening of the infuser base such that the cannula is subcutaneously inserted into the infusion site. The method also includes subsequently removeably attaching a hub of the infusion set to a barb of the infuser base such that a hub needle of the hub pierces a self-sealing septum of the cannula cartridge, thus creating a fluid pathway from the hub needle to the cannula. Further included in the method is laterally attaching a tube set connector (in a direction perpendicular to the direction of cannula insertion) to the hub in a user-releasable manner, thus mounting the infusion set to the infusion site. In the method, the attachment of the hub to the barb provides for user-controlled three-hundred and sixty (360°) rotateable engagement between the hub and the barb.

Claims

1. A method for mounting an infusion set to an infusion site comprising:

adhering an infuser base of the insertion set to an infusion site on a user'"'"'s skin;

inserting a cannula cartridge of the infusion set into an opening of the infuser base such that a cannula of the cannula cartridge is subcutaneously inserted into the infusion site;

removeably attaching a hub of the infusion set to a barb of the infuser base such that a hub needle of the hub pierces a self-sealing septum of the cannula cartridge, thereby creating a fluid pathway from the hub needle to the cannula the infusion site; and

laterally attaching a tube set connector to the hub in a direction perpendicular to the direction of cannula insertion in a user-releasable manner, thus mounting the infusion set to the infusion site,

wherein the attachment of the hub to the barb provides for user-controlled three-hundred and sixty (360°

) rotateable engagement between the hub and the barb.

2. The method of claim 1 further including the step of loading the cannula cartridge partially into the opening of the infuser base before the adhering step.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the inserting step is accomplished with a cannula insertion device.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the adhering and inserting steps are accomplished with a cannula inserting device.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the attachment of the hub to the barb provides for user-controlled 360°

rotateable engagement between the hub and the barb via a gripping engagement between at least one resilient band of the hub and the barb.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the attachment of the hub to the barb further provides for at least one of user tactile feedback and user auditory feedback of hub rotary motion by cooperation between a plurality of projections on the infuser base and a plurality of indentations on hub.

The method of claim 1 wherein the attachment of the hub to the barb further provides for at least one of user tactile feedback and user auditory feedback of hub rotary motion by cooperation between a plurality of projections on the hub and a plurality of radially-spaced indentations on infuser base.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the adhering step is accomplished using an adhesive pad of the infuser base.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the lateral attachment involves laterally attaching the tube set connector in a latching manner.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein the indentations are circular and the projections are hemispherical in shape.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the hub includes an outer ring with a plurality of indentations and the infuser base includes a plurality of projections, the indentations and projections cooperating to provide a predetermined resistance to rotary motion of the hub.
