1. A computer-implemented method of managing communication with an input device, wherein communication with the device is switchable between first and second communication modes, the method comprising:
- providing a code value to the input device when the input device is in the first mode of communication;
receiving, from the input device when in the second mode of communication, an authentication value;
authenticating the input device by evaluating a relationship between the authentication value and the code value; and
limiting a functionality of the input device based on a determination that the authentication value does not properly correspond to the code value.

Abstract
Embodiments of software-supervised pairing processes are provided. The processes enable a user to pair a mouse and keyboard with a Bluetooth transceiver without having to use a second mouse and keyboard. At least two separate processes are provided, including a long transition for initial pairing or re-pairing and a short transition for re-establishing a connection after devices have already been paired.

9. A computer-implemented method of managing communication with an input device, the method comprising:
-
receiving a data record that includes a report descriptor; performing a comparison to determine whether the report descriptor validly corresponds to the input device; and limiting functionality of the input device if the report descriptor does not validly correspond. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12)

14. A computer-implemented method of managing communication with an input device, wherein communication with the device is switchable between first and second communication modes, the method comprising:
-
sending a command in the form of an instruction to switch from the first mode of communication to the second mode of communication; performing a check to determine whether the input device is properly registered for communication in the second mode; determining that the input device is not properly registered for communication in the second mode; and responding to the determination by sending a second command in the form of an instruction to switch back to the first mode of communication. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
