Abstract
An apparatus for processing a transmitted digital signal including at least one of a video signal and an audio signal. The apparatus includes a receiver which receives the transmitted digital signal, wherein the transmitted digital signal includes a video signal which is bit-compressed, an audio signal which is bit-compressed, and an error correction signal added commonly to both the video signal and the audio signal, a demodulator which demodulates the received digital signal, and an error corrector which corrects an error of the digital signal demodulated by the demodulator. A first expander bit-expands the video signal of the digital signal corrected by the error corrector, a second expander bit-expands the audio signal of the digital signal corrected by the error corrector.

2. A method for transmitting and receiving digital information to transmit digital video information and a digital audio information and to receive digital video information and digital audio information, comprising the steps of:

a first compressing step which bit-compresses digital video information by a first compression system using a discrete cosine transform; a second compressing step which bit-compresses digital audio information by a second compression system; a parity signal adding step which adds a common parity signal for detecting an error to both of the digital video information and the digital audio information; a modulating step which modulates the digital video information and the digital audio information to which the parity signal has been added by the parity signal adding step; a transmitting step which transmits the modulated information in the modulating step to a transmission path; a receiving step which receives the modulated information; a demodulating step which demodulates the modulated information received in the receiving step; an error detecting step which detects an error of the digital information demodulated in the demodulating step by use of the parity signal; a first expanding step which bit-expands video information corresponding to the first compression system; and a second expanding step which bit-expands audio information corresponding to the second compression system.
