Abstract

When a communications system initiates a connection, adaptive information can be presented to a user while waiting for that connection to be finalized. The adaptive information that is presented can be selected based on predetermined criteria which can be configured by a user. Moreover, the adaptive information that is presented can be selected based on a characteristic of the connection. For example, adaptive information can be selected which corresponds to the connection endpoint (e.g., the person or place a user is attempting to contact). A system can also delay finalizing a connection in order to present more adaptive information to a user. The delay can last until after all of the adaptive information has been presented or until a unit of adaptive information has been presented.

Claims

1. A method for presenting adaptive information during a connection event comprising initiation and finalization, the method comprising:

initiating the connection event; and

presenting adaptive information in response to the initiation of the connection event such that at least a portion of the adaptive information is presented before finalization.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein initiating a connection event comprises receiving a user command.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein initiating a connection event comprises connecting two or more devices.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the adaptive information is based on calendar events.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the connection event occurs between a user and another party and wherein the adaptive information is related to the identity of the other party.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the adaptive information is based on upcoming calendar events that involve the other party.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the adaptive information is based on previous communications between the user and the other party.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the adaptive information is based on data previously transmitted to the user from the other party.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the adaptive information is an advertisement.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the adaptive information is music.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the adaptive information is presented audibly.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the adaptive information is presented graphically.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the connection event is a telephone call.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein initiating the connection event comprises routing the telephone call.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the adaptive information is related to a telephone number being called.

16. A communications device operable to present adaptive information, the device comprising:

communications circuitry operable to initiate a connection with another device;

processor circuitry operable to select adaptive information; and

user interface circuitry operable to present at least a portion of the adaptive information to a user before the connection with another device finalizes.

17. The device of claim 16, further comprising:

storage circuitry operable to store adaptive information which can be selected by the processor circuitry.

18. The device of claim 16, further comprising:

one or more batteries.

19. The device of claim 16, wherein the communications circuitry is operable to initiate a cellular telephone call.

20. The device of claim 16, wherein the user interface circuitry includes a display which is operable to present adaptive information graphically.

21. The device of claim 16, wherein the user interface circuitry includes one or more audio speakers which are operable to present adaptive information audibly.

22. The device of claim 16, wherein the user interface circuitry includes one or more input means which are operable to receive an input from a user.

23. A communications system comprising:

a first communications device operable to initiate connection events with other devices and present adaptive information in response to the initiation;

a communications network operable to communicate with a plurality of communications devices; and

a second communications device operable to communicate with the first communications device.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the first device is a cellular telephone, the communications network is a cellular telephone network and the second device is a cellular telephone.

25. The system of claim 23, wherein the first device comprises storage circuitry operable to store adaptive information.

26. The system of claim 23, wherein the communications network is operable to transmit adaptive information to a first communications device.
