Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatuses for delivering therapeutic fluid to a user are disclosed. The apparatus includes a pump mechanism for pumping therapeutic fluid to the user having a reusable part which includes a housing and a disposable part configured to be inserted into the housing of the reusable part and to be connected with the reusable part. The connection of the reusable part and the disposable part enables operation of the pump mechanism and disconnection of the reusable part and the disposable part disables operation of the pump mechanism

Claims

1. Apparatus for pumping fluid to a mammal'"'"'s body, comprising:

a first component of a pump mechanism contained within a first part of a housing; and

a second component of the pump mechanism contained within a second part of the housing;

wherein the first part of the housing and the second part of the housing are configured for relative displacement between an open position in which the pump mechanism is disabled and a closed position in which the pump mechanism is enabled.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pump mechanism comprises a linear positive displacement pump.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the first component of the pump mechanism comprises a stator supported by a spring.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the second component of the pump mechanism comprises a rotary wheel with rollers.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the second part of the housing further comprises at least one of a motor and a printed circuit board.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first part of the housing and the second part of the housing are connectable.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the connection comprises a hinged connection.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one component that is insertable to and removable from the housing when the housing is in the open position.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the at least one component comprises a cassette-like insert.

10. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the at least one component comprises at least one of a reservoir, filling port, delivery tube, and battery.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the at least one component comprises at least a reservoir and wherein the reservoir is transparent.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the at least a portion of the housing is transparent.

13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the at least one component further comprises an exit port for connection to a cannula.

14. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the at least one component further comprises a well arrangement.

15. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein:

the first component of the pump mechanism resides in the first part of the housing and is reusable;

the second component of the pump mechanism resides in the second part of the housing and is reusable; and

the at least one component that is insertable to and removable from the housing is disposable.

16. The apparatus of claim 8, which

comprises a sealing mechanism for sealing the first part of the housing,

the second part of the housing, and the at least one component when the housing is in the closed position.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the sealing mechanism comprises at least one gasket.

18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the housing is attachable to a carrier unit.

19. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the housing is attachable to a cradle unit.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the cradle unit is adapted to receive a cannula cartridge unit.

21. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the housing is adherable to the mammal'"'"'s skin.

22. The apparatus of claim 1, comprising a remote control unit.

23. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the housing is provided with at least one control button.

24. A method for delivering fluid to a mammal'"'"'s body, comprising:

moving a first part of a housing relative to a second part of the housing in order to expose an opening within the housing, wherein the first part of the housing comprises a first component of a pump mechanism, and

the second part of the housing comprises the second component of the pump mechanism;

adding fluid to a reservoir externally to the housing;

inserting the reservoir into the opening within the housing; and

repositioning the first part of the housing relative to the second party of the housing;

wherein moving the first part of the housing and the second part of the housing to the closed position renders the pump mechanism operable;

delivering the fluid to a subcutaneous compartment of the mammal'"'"'s body by the pump mechanism.

25. The method of claim 24, comprising establishing fluid communication between the reservoir and the subcutaneous compartment through a subcutaneously insertable cannula.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the subcutaneously insertable cannula is a part of a group consisting of:

an infusion set, a well arrangement and a cannula cartridge unit.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein adding fluid to the reservoir comprises adding fluid to a transparent reservoir enabling visual inspection of the fill level.

28. The method of claim 24, wherein repositioning the first part of the housing relative to the second part of the housing establishes a seal between the first and the second part of the housing.

29. The method of claim 24, wherein repositioning the first part of the housing relative to the second part of the housing establishes juxtaposition of the first component and second component of the pump mechanism.
