Abstract

An electrochemical secondary cell is disclosed. The cell includes a cathode, an anode, a cathode current collector including stainless steel, and an electrolyte containing a perchlorate salt and a second salt.

Claims

1. An electrochemical cell, comprising:

a cathode;

an anode;

an electrolyte comprising a perchlorate salt;

a first portion comprising aluminum; and

a second portion in electrical contact with the first portion,

wherein the first and second portions are in electrical contact with the cathode.

2. The cell of claim 1, wherein the first portion comprises an aluminum alloy.

3. The cell of claim 1, wherein the first portion is defined by a tab, a rivet, or a contact plate.

4. The cell of claim 1, wherein the second portion comprises a material different than a material of the first portion.

5. The cell of claim 1, wherein the second portion comprises steel or stainless steel.

6. The cell of claim 1, wherein the cell is a primary cell.

7. The cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte comprises between 300 ppm and 50,000 ppm by weight of the perchlorate salt.

8. The cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte comprises between 300 ppm and 40,000 ppm by weight of the perchlorate salt.

9. The cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte comprises between 300 ppm and 30,000 ppm by weight of the perchlorate salt.

10. The cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte comprises between 300 ppm and 20,000 ppm by weight of the perchlorate salt.

11. The cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte comprises between 300 ppm and 10,000 ppm by weight of the perchlorate salt.

12. The cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte comprises between 300 ppm and 5,000 ppm by weight of the perchlorate salt.

13. The cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises manganese oxide and/or iron disulfide.

14. The cell of claim 1, wherein the first portion comprising aluminum is a cathode current collector.

15. The cell of claim 14, wherein the cathode comprises manganese dioxide.

16. The cell of claim 14, wherein the cathode comprises iron disulfide.

17. The cell of claim 14, wherein the second portion comprises steel or stainless steel in physical contact with the cathode current collector.

18. The cell of claim 17, wherein the second portion includes a positive lead.

19. The cell of claim 1, wherein the percholorate salt is LiClO₄.

20. The cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte further includes a second salt selected from the group consisting of lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate, lithium trifluoromethanesulfonimide, and LiPF₆.

21. The cell of claim 20, wherein the salts in the electrolyte consist of the perchlorate salt and lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate.

22. The cell of claim 20, wherein the salts in the electrolyte consist of the perchlorate salt and lithium trifluoromethanesulfonimide.
