1. A wireless system for carrying at least one subscriber service between a network and a subscriber terminal via a wireless link, the system comprising:
- at least one base station interconnecting the network and the wireless link, the base station operable to transceive the subscriber service over the wireless link; and
a subscriber station interconnecting the subscriber terminal and the wireless link, the subscriber station having a steerable antenna that is operable to be oriented in a direction having a desired transception-quality of the subscriber service over the wireless link, wherein the subscriber station additionally comprises a microprocessor-assembly interconnecting the subscriber terminal and a modem, the microprocessor-assembly being configured for processing the subscriber service, and the modem being configured for modulating and demodulating the subscriber service; and
a radio interconnecting the modem and the steerable antenna for converting the subscriber service for transception over the wireless link,wherein the microprocessor-assembly, the modem, the radio, and the steerable antenna are all housed within a single chassis.

Abstract
A wireless local loop system is provided that includes a wireless base station that communicates with a subscriber station via a wireless link. The wireless link can carry a voice service, such as telephone calls, or a data service, such as internet browsing. The subscriber station includes a steerable antenna. A presently preferred steerable antenna for use with the subscriber station includes a driven element mounted on a base plane that is surrounded by a plurality of parasitic elements also mounted to the base plane. The parasitic elements can be optionally grounded or floated in order to reflect the wireless link towards the driven element. The antenna can be oriented in a desired direction during the transception of a voice or data service. A method of transceiving between a wireless local loop subscriber station and a wireless local loop base station is also provided.

47. A method of orienting a steerable antenna housed in a wireless subscriber station comprising the steps of:

determining whether an appropriate time has been reached to orient the steerable antenna within a wireless system; if an appropriate time has been reached, then illuminating the steerable antenna in a given orientation and measuring a transception-quality of a wireless link in the given orientation; storing the measured transception-quality for later use; repeating the illuminating and storing steps until a desired number of orientations have been illuminated; applying a selection criterion to the stored measured transception-qualities to select an orientation that has a desired transception-quality for a subscriber service transmitted over the wireless link; and orienting the steerable antenna towards the selected orientation. - View Dependent Claims (48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57)
