CATHETER
First Claim
1. A retrieval catheter comprising:
- a catheter shaft defining a reception space for a medical device;
a centering member movable relative to the catheter shaft between an introduction configuration in which the centering member extends distally of the catheter shaft, and a retrieval configuration in which the centering member is located proximally of a distal end of the catheter shaft for retrieval of a medical device into the reception space; and
an operating element coupled to the centering member to facilitate movement of the centering member between the introduction configuration and the retrieval configuration;
along at least a portion of the length of the operating element, the cross-sectional area of the operating element being small relative to the cross-sectional area of the catheter shaft.

Abstract
A retrieval catheter 1 for retrieval of an embolic protection filter from a vasculature. The catheter 1 comprises a proximal hypotube 3, a radially offset distal shaft 4 and a centering shank 9. A guidewire lumen 13 is provided through the shank 9 in communication with a larger guidewire lumen 7 through the shaft 4 for a continuous guidewire passageway to accommodate passage of a guidewire 21 through the shank 9, the shaft 4 and out through a proximal guidewire opening 6 to facilitate rapid exchange of the catheter 1 over a guidewire 21. The shank 9 is movable between an introduction configuration in which the shank 9 protrudes distally from the shaft 4 to centre the catheter 1 during advancement through a vasculature, and a retrieval configuration in which the shank 9 is located within the guidewire lumen 7 to facilitate retrieval of an embolic protection filter into the shaft 4.

79. A method of retrieving a medical device from a vasculature, the method comprising the steps of:
-
providing a retrieval catheter comprising a catheter shaft and a centering member; advancing the catheter through a vasculature over a guidewire in a rapid-exchange manner, with the centering member extending from a distal end of the catheter shaft, until the centering member is proximally adjacent to the medical device to be retrieved; manipulating the centering member from externally of the vasculature to move the centering member proximally relative to the catheter shaft; retrieving the medical device into the catheter shaft; and withdrawing the retrieval catheter and the retrieved medical device from the vasculature over the guidewire in a rapid exchange manner. - View Dependent Claims (80, 81)
