Abstract

An implantable prosthesis system including a selectively applied bone growth promoting agent is disclosed. The types of prostheses which may include a selectively applied bone growth promoting agent include rods, fracture plates, screws, as well as other types of prostheses. Additionally, the structural composition of many types of prostheses may be modified to help induce bone ingrowth and allow for fusion with the implantable prosthesis.

Claims

1. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a rod configured for implantation into a bone;

the rod including a first portion and a second portion;

a bone growth promoting agent; and

wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the first portion.

2. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 1, wherein the rod has a solid core.

3. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 1, wherein the rod includes a third portion and a fourth portion.

4. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 3, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the first and the third portion.

5. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 1, wherein the rod includes holes.

6. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 1, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is applied to the entire rod.

7. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 1, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is disposed in a pattern selected from the group consisting essentially of striped patterns, spotted patterns, diagonal patterns, geometric patterns, shapes and any combination thereof.

8. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a rod configured for implantation into a bone;

a sheet material including a bone growth promoting agent; and

wherein the sheet material is associated with the rod.

9. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 8, wherein the sheet material is selected from the group consisting essentially of continuous fabrics, mesh fabrics, collagens, biologic matrices, metallic foils and plastic sheets.

10. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 8, wherein the sheet material may be cut to a preconfigured size.

11. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 8, wherein the sheet material may be cut to a preconfigured shape.

12. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 8, wherein the sheet material is attached to the rod with an attachment selected from the group consisting essentially of an adhesive, hooks, microscopic hooks, temperature difference, interference fit, a Morris taper and magnetic features.

13. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 8, wherein the sheet material is rolled around the rod.

14. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a rod configured for implantation into a bone and having a length;

the rod having a hollow central core along at least a portion of the length;

the rod also having at least one hole placing the hollow central core in fluid communication with an exterior surface of the rod; and

a bone growth promoting agent selectively applied to the exterior surface of the rod.

15. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 14, wherein the rod includes holes along at least a portion of the length.

16. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 14, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is also applied to an inner surface of the hollow central core.

17. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 14, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is disposed in at least one wall of the hole.

18. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 17, wherein the rod includes a plurality of holes.

19. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 18, wherein the holes are disposed along the entirety of the rod.

20. A method of fusing an implantable prosthesis to a bone, comprising the steps of:

selecting a rod with a selectively applied bone growth promoting agent, including an outer surface, an inner surface and a set of holes disposed between the outer surface and the inner surface;

implanting the rod inside the bone; and

allowing bone to grow into at least one hole of the set of holes.

21. The method according to claim 20, wherein the bone is allowed to grow into a hollow central core.

22. The method according to claim 21, wherein a portion of the bone fuses inside the hollow central core.

23. The method according to claim 20, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the outer surface.

24. The method according to claim 20, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the inner surface.

25. The method according to claim 20, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the hole.

26. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a fracture plate configured to be attached to a bone;

the fracture plate including a first portion and a second portion along a lower surface; and

wherein a bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the first portion of the lower surface.

27. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 26, wherein the fracture plate includes holes.

28. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 27, wherein the fracture plate includes a third portion.

29. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 28, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the first and the third region.

30. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 26, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is disposed in a pattern selected from the group consisting essentially of striped patterns, spotted patterns, diagonal patterns geometric patterns, shapes and any combination thereof.

31. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 26, wherein the fracture plate includes at least one hole configured to receive a screw.

32. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 31, wherein the fracture plate includes two holes, each hole being configured to receive a screw.

33. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 31, wherein the fracture plate includes more than two holes.

34. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a fracture plate configured to be attached to a bone;

the fracture plate including a recess configured to receive a liner;

the liner including a first portion and a second portion along a lower surface configured to contact the bone; and

wherein a bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the first portion of the lower surface.

35. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 34, wherein the depth of the recess is approximately equal to the thickness of the liner.

36. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 34, wherein the liner is a wafer of bone.

37. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 34, wherein the liner is attached to the fracture plate with an attachment selected from the group consisting essentially of an adhesive, hooks, microscopic hooks, temperature difference, interference fit, a Morris taper and magnetic features.

38. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 34, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is disposed in a pattern selected from the group consisting essentially of striped patterns, spotted patterns, diagonal patterns, geometric patterns, shapes and any combination thereof.

39. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a fracture plate including at least one hole disposed along a lower surface;

the lower surface including a first region and a second region; and

wherein a bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to the first region and at least one hole.

40. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 39, wherein the fracture plate includes many holes.

41. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 40, wherein the holes are disposed along the entirety of the lower surface.

42. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 39, wherein the holes include a bone growth promoting agent.

43. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 39, wherein the holes contact a tissue adjacent to the bone.

44. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a screw configured for insertion into a bone;

the screw including threading;

the threading including threading peaks and threading valleys;

a bone growth promoting agent; and

wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to a portion of the threading.

45. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 44, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to at least one of the group consisting essentially of the threading valleys, the threading peaks, upper portions of the threading, lower portions of the threading, middle portions of the threading and any combinations thereof.

46. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 44, wherein the bone growth promoting agent is applied to the entire threading.

47. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 44, wherein the screw includes at least one hole.

48. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 47, wherein a bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to at least one wall of the hole.

49. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 44, wherein the screw includes multiple holes.

50. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 44, wherein the screw includes a hollow central core.

51. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 44, wherein the screw includes a boring tip.

52. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 44, wherein the screw includes a screw head.

53. An implantable prosthesis system, comprising:

a screw having a length and configured for insertion into a bone;

the screw including a cavity extending at least a portion of the length of the screw;

the cavity including an inner surface; and

wherein a bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to inner surface.

54. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 53, wherein the screw includes a boring tip.

55. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 53, wherein the screw includes a screw head.

56. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 55, wherein the screw includes at least one hole.

57. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 56, wherein a bone growth promoting agent is selectively applied to at least one wall of the hole.

58. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 56, wherein the screw includes multiple holes.

59. The implantable prosthesis system according to claim 58, wherein the outer surface and the inner surface are in fluid communication through at least one hole.
