Abstract

A cylindrical or annular polymeric bioreactor is disclosed which provides enhanced mixing and aeration of the growth medium while simultaneously offering reduced mechanical shear force.

Claims

1. A bioreactor comprising a toroidal polymeric container.

2. A bioreactor in accordance with claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the inner surface thereof is textured with a plurality of upstanding protuberances.

3. A bioreactor in accordance with claim 2, wherein at least some of said protuberances allow the passage of sparging gas there through into said vessel.

4. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 3, having the textured surface on the bottom of the vessel.

5. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1, having a configuration such that there is resonant build-up of a traveling wave when a particular amplitude and orbital speed is imparted to said vessel.

6. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1, further comprising ports for sensors.

7. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1, further comprising pre-molded baffles on at least a portion of the inner surface of said vessel.

8. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1, fabricated from a substantially rigid plastic.

9. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1, fabricated from a substantially flexible plastic.

10. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1, including at least one pre-inserted and pre-calibrated sensor.

11. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1, further comprising means for illuminating the contents of said vessel.

12. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 10 wherein said illumination means comprises at least one LED.

13. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1 further comprising means for imparting orbital motion to said vessel.

14. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 12 including means for reversing the direction of orbiting of said vessel.

15. A bioreactor vessel in accordance with claim 1 further comprising means for simultaneously both orbiting and rocking said vessel.
