Abstract

A system for maintaining an address book, wherein the address book includes a plurality of entries with each entry containing contact information and wherein address book updates are transmitted over a wireless network. The system includes a gateway for storing the address book and transmitting the address book updates to a wireless device.

Claims

1. A method of maintaining an address book, comprising:

receiving contact information from at least one external source;

storing contact information received from the at least one external source;

providing a gateway between a wireless network and an external network; and

transmitting data between the gateway and at least one computing device coupled to at least one of the wireless network and the external network.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing messaging information.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising converting data from a first protocol to a second protocol.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein one of the first protocol and the second protocol is a wireless application protocol.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the first protocol and the second protocol is an internet communications protocol.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing content encoding.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein performing content encoding comprises encoding wireless markup language into binary format.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting comprises utilizing a wireless protocol to communicate contact information with a wireless device.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining at least one property of the at least one computing device and adapting to communicate with the computing device.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising updating the computing device in response to at least one of a predetermined time period, a user request, and a modification to the contact information.

11. A computer readable medium for maintaining an address book, comprising:

first logic receiving contact information from at least one external source;

second logic storing contact information received from the at least external source;

third logic providing a gateway between a wireless network and an external network; and

fourth logic transmitting data between the gateway and at least one computing device coupled to at least one of the wireless network and the external network.

12. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein the external network is the Internet.

13. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein the computing device is a wireless computing device.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 13, wherein the wireless device is a pager.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising fifth logic verifying a user'"'"'s status before allowing the user to modify the address book.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising sixth logic for at least one of changing contact information, deleting contact and adding contact information.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising seventh logic verifying a user'"'"'s status.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 11, wherein the contact information includes at least one of an email address, a name, a residential address, a business address, a company name, a business phone number, a home phone number, a mobile phone number, and a fax number.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising eighth logic storing messaging information from the at least one computing device.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising ninth logic converting data from a first protocol to a second protocol.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 20, wherein one of the first protocol and the second protocol is a wireless application protocol.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 20, wherein one of the first protocol and the second protocol is an Internet communications protocol.

23. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising tenth logic performing content encoding.

24. The computer readable medium of claim 23, wherein performing content encoding comprises encoding wireless markup language into binary format.

25. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising eleventh logic utilizing a wireless protocol to communicate contact information with a wireless device.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising twelfth logic determining at least one property of the at least one computing device coupled to at least one of the external network ant the wireless network and adapting to communicate with the computing device.

27. The computer readable medium of claim 11, further comprising thirteenth logic updating the computing device coupled to at least one of the external network and the wireless network in response to at least one of a predetermined time period, a user request and a modification to the contact information.
