Abstract

A system and method for inserting an intraocular lens in a patient'"'"'s eye includes a light source for generating a light beam, a scanner for deflecting the light beam to form an enclosed treatment pattern that includes a registration feature, and a delivery system for delivering the enclosed treatment pattern to target tissue in the patient'"'"'s eye to form an enclosed incision therein having the registration feature. An intraocular lens is placed within the enclosed incision, wherein the intraocular lens has a registration feature that engages with the registration feature of the enclosed incision. Alternately, the scanner can make a separate registration incision for a post that is connected to the intraocular lens via a strut member.

Claims

1. A device for treating a lesion on target tissue, comprising:

a light source for generating a light beam;

a scanner for deflecting the light beam in the form of an enclosed treatment pattern that includes a registration feature; and

a delivery system of one or more optical elements configured to deliver the enclosed treatment pattern to target tissue to form an enclosed incision therein having the registration feature.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the registration feature is an asymmetric shape of the enclosed treatment pattern.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the registration feature is a protrusion in an outer boundary of the enclosed treatment pattern.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the registration feature is a notch in an outer boundary of the enclosed treatment pattern.

5. An intraocular lens for insertion into a patient'"'"'s eye, comprising:

a lens portion shaped for focusing light passing therethrough; and

at least two haptics extending from the lens portion for supplying a spring force to the lens portion;

wherein the lens portion includes a peripheral edge that forms a registration feature.

6. The intraocular lens of claim 5 wherein the registration feature is an asymmetric shape of the peripheral edge.

7. The intraocular lens of claim 5 wherein the registration feature is a protrusion formed in the peripheral edge.

8. The intraocular lens of claim 5 wherein the registration feature is a notch formed in the peripheral edge.

9. The intraocular lens of claim 5 wherein the peripheral edge includes a groove for engaging with tissue.

10. The intraocular lens of claim 5, further comprising:

a flange surrounding the lens portion.

11. The intraocular lens of claim 10, wherein the lens portion is configured to rotate within the flange.

12. The intraocular lens of claim 11, wherein at least one of the lens portion and flange includes angular alignment marks formed thereon.

13. A method of inserting an intraocular lens in a patient'"'"'s eye, comprising:

generating a light beam;

deflecting the light beam using a scanner to form an enclosed treatment pattern that includes a registration feature;

delivering the enclosed treatment pattern to target tissue in the patient'"'"'s eye to form an enclosed incision therein having the registration feature; and

placing an intraocular lens within the enclosed incision, wherein the intraocular lens has a registration feature that engages with the registration feature of the enclosed incision.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the registration feature of the enclosed incision is an asymmetric shape and the registration feature of the intraoculular lens is a peripheral edge with an asymmetric shape matching that of the enclosed incision, and wherein the placing of the intraocular lens includes engaging the registration features together.

The method of claim 13 wherein the registration feature of the enclosed incision is one of a protrusion and a notch in the target tissue formed by the enclosed incision and the registration feature of the intraoculular lens is a peripheral edge with one of a protrusion and a notch formed therein, and wherein the placing of the intraocular lens includes engaging the registration features together.

The method of claim 13 wherein the intraocular lens comprises a lens portion shaped for focusing light passing therethrough and a peripheral edge that includes an annular groove, and wherein the placing of the intraocular lens includes engaging the annular groove with an edge of the target tissue formed by the enclosed incision.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the intraocular lens comprises a lens portion shaped for focusing light passing therethrough and a flange surrounding the lens such that the lens portion is configured to rotate within the flange, and wherein the method further comprises:

rotating the lens portion within the flange.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein at least one of the lens portion and flange includes angular alignment marks formed thereon, and wherein the rotating is ceased when a desired angular position indicated by the angular alignment marks is achieved.

19. An intraocular lens for insertion into a patient'"'"'s eye, comprising:

a lens portion shaped for focusing light passing therethrough;

at least two haptics extending from the lens portion for supplying a spring force to the lens portion; and

a post separated from, and connected to the lens portion by, at least one strut member.

20. A method of inserting an intraocular lens in a patient'"'"'s eye, comprising:

generating a light beam;

deflecting the light beam using a scanner to form an enclosed treatment pattern and a registration pattern;

delivering the enclosed treatment pattern and the second pattern to target tissue in the patient'"'"'s eye to form an enclosed incision and a registration incision therein;

placing an intraocular lens within the enclosed incision;

placing a post within the registration incision; and

connecting the post to the intraocular lens using at least one strut member.
