Abstract

A respiratory component measurement system that includes an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient and a sensor element in physical communication with the airway adapter. The sensor element is adapted to detect an orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter, a motion related characteristic of the airway adapter, or both. A respiratory component sensor is also adapted to be disposed on the airway adapter so as to measure a characteristic associated with a flow of gas through the airway adapter.

Claims

1. A respiratory component measurement system comprising:

an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient;

a sensor element in physical communication with the airway adapter, wherein the sensor element is adapted to detect an orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter, a motion related characteristic of the airway adapter, or both; and

a respiratory component sensor adapted to be disposed on the airway adapter so as to measure a characteristic associated with a flow of gas through the airway adapter.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the respiratory component sensor is a flow sensor, a volume sensor, a gas sensor, a humidity sensor, a temperature sensor, a pressure sensor, or any combination thereof.

3. The system according to claim 2, wherein the gas sensor comprises:

an infrared radiation gas sensing system, a luminescence quenching gas sensing system, an electrochemical gas sensing system, or any combination thereof.

4. The system according to claim 2, wherein the gas sensor measures carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, anesthetic agents, trace gases, exhaled breath markers, nitric oxide or any combination thereof.

5. The system according to claim 1, wherein respiratory component sensor includes:

a gas sensor; and

a sample tube coupled to the airway adapter and the gas sensor so as to communicate a gas sample from the airway adapter to the gas sensor.

6. The system according to claim 1, wherein the respiratory component sensor is integral with the airway adapter or separable from the airway adapter.

7. The system according to claim 6, where the sensor element is disposed in the respiratory component sensor.

8. The system according to claim 1, wherein the sensor element comprises an accelerometer, inclinometer, electrolytic sensor, liquid tilt sensor, magnetoresistive sensor, or any combination thereof.

The system according to claim 1, further comprising a processor adapted to receive a signal from the sensor element, and wherein the processor is programmed to determine whether the orientation related characteristic, the motion related characteristic, or both exceed a predetermined limit based on the signal from the sensor element.

10. The system according to claim 1, further comprising:

a host system; and

a communication link between the host system and the sensor element, wherein the communication link is hardwired, wireless, or a combination thereof.

11. The system according to claim 1, wherein the orientation related characteristic includes an orientation of the airway adapter, a position of the airway adapter, a change of the orientation of the airway adapter, a change of the position of the airway adapter, or any combination thereof.

The system according to claim 1, wherein the motion related characteristic includes a force, an impact, a shock, a jerk, an impulse, a vibration, an acceleration, a deceleration, a motion of, a change in acceleration, a change in deceleration, a change in motion of the airway adapter, or any combination thereof.

13. A respiratory component measurement system comprising:

an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient;

a sensor comprising a first element and second element, wherein the first element is in physical communication with the airway adapter, and wherein the second element is adapted to detect an orientation related characteristic of the first element, a motion related characteristic of the first element, or both; and

a respiratory component sensor adapted to be disposed on the airway adapter in fluid communication with the airway of a patient.

14. The system according to claim 13, wherein the respiratory component sensor is a flow sensor, volume sensor, gas sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, or any combination thereof operatively coupled to the airway adapter.

15. The system according to claim 14, wherein the gas sensor comprises:

an infrared radiation gas sensing system, a luminescence quenching gas sensing system, an electrochemical gas sensing system, or any combination thereof.

16. The system according to claim 14, wherein the gas sensor measures carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, anesthetic agents, trace gases, exhaled breath markers, nitric oxide or any combination thereof.

17. The system according to claim 13, further comprising a sample tube coupled to the airway adapter so as to convey a gas sample to the respiratory component sensor.

18. The system according to claim 13, wherein the respiratory component sensor is integral with the airway adapter or separable from the airway adapter.

19. The system according to claim 18, where the second element is disposed in the respiratory component sensor.

20. The system according to claim 13, wherein the first element and second element comprises a magnetoresistive elements.

21. The system according to claim 13, further comprising a processor adapted to receive a signal from the second element, and wherein the processor is programmed to determine whether the orientation related characteristic, the motion related characteristic, or both, exceeds a predetermined limit based on the signal from the second element.

22. The system according to claim 13, further comprising:

a host system; and

a communication link between the host system and the sensor element, wherein the communication link is hardwired, wireless, or a combination thereof.

23. The system according to claim 13, wherein the orientation related characteristic includes an orientation of the first element, a position of the first element, a changes of the orientation of the first element, a change of the position of the first element, or any combination thereof.

24. The system according to claim 13, wherein the motion related characteristic includes a force, an impact, a shock, a jerk, an impulse, a vibration, an acceleration, a deceleration, a motion of, a change in acceleration, a change in deceleration, a change in motion of the first element, or any combination thereof.

25. A respiratory component measurement system comprising:

an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient;

sensing means for detecting an orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter, a motion related characteristic of the airway adapter, or both; and

respiratory component sensing means operatively coupled to the airway adapter for measuring a characteristic associated with a flow of gas through the airway adapter.

26. The system according to claim 25, wherein the respiratory component sensing means is a flow sensor, volume sensor, gas sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, or any combination thereof operatively coupled to the airway adapter.

27. The system according to claim 26, wherein the gas sensor comprises:

an infrared radiation gas sensing system, a luminescence quenching gas sensing system, an electrochemical gas sensing system, or any combination thereof.

28. The system according to claim 26, wherein the gas sensor measures carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, anesthetic agents, trace gases, exhaled breath markers, nitric oxide or any combination thereof.

29. The system according to claim 25, further comprising a sample tube coupled to the airway adapter so as to convey a gas sample to the respiratory component sensing means.

30. The system according to claim 25, wherein the respiratory component sensing means is integral with the airway adapter or separable from the airway adapter.

31. The system according to claim 25, where the sensing means is disposed in the respiratory component sensor.

32. The system according to claim 25, wherein the sensing means comprises an accelerometer, inclinometer, electrolytic sensor, liquid tilt sensor, magnetoresistive sensor, or any combination thereof.

33. The system according to claim 25, further comprising processing means for determining whether the orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter, the motion related characteristic of the airway adapter, or both exceeds a predetermined limit based on the signal from the sensing means.

34. The system according to claim 25, further comprising:

a host system; and

a communication link between the host system and the sensing means, wherein the communication link is hardwired, wireless, or a combination thereof.

35. The system according to claim 25, wherein the orientation related characteristic includes an orientation of the airway adapter, a position of the airway adapter, a changes of the orientation of the airway adapter, a change of the position of the airway adapter, or any combination thereof.

36. The system according to claim 25, wherein the motion related characteristic includes a force, an impact, a shock, a jerk, an impulse, a vibration, an acceleration, a deceleration, a motion of, a change in acceleration, a change in deceleration, a change in motion of the airway adapter, or any combination thereof.

37. A method of measuring respiratory component comprising:

providing an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient;

detecting an orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter, a motion related characteristic of the airway adapter, or both; and

measuring a characteristic associated with a flow of gas through the airway adapter.

38. The method according to claim 37, wherein the respiratory component is detected with a flow sensor, volume sensor, gas sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, or any combination thereof operatively coupled to the airway adapter.

39. The method according to claim 38, wherein the gas sensor comprises:

an infrared radiation gas sensing system, a luminescence quenching gas sensing system, an electrochemical gas sensing system, or any combination thereof.

40. The method according to claim 38, wherein the gas sensor measures carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, anesthetic agents, trace gases, exhaled breath markers, nitric oxide or any combination thereof.

41. The method according to claim 37, further comprising conveying a gas sample from a sample tube coupled to the airway adapter to the gas sensor.

42. The method according to claim 37, wherein detecting the orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter, the motion related characteristic of the airway adapter, or both is accomplished using an accelerometer, inclinometer, electrolytic sensor, liquid tilt sensor, magnetoresistive sensor, or any combination thereof.

43. The method according to claim 37, further comprising:

receiving a signal as a result of the detecting step; and

processing the signal to determine whether the orientation related characteristic, the motion related characteristic, or both exceeds a predetermined limit.

44. The method according to claim 37, further comprising communicating the orientation related characteristic, the motion related characteristic, or both to the host system via a hardwired communication, a wireless communication, or combination thereof.
