Abstract

An image-bearing article comprising a film layer bearing an image and an acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer sheet having a Glass transition temperature of 23° C. or less. In addition, a process of preparing an image-bearing article comprising an image-bearing film layer and an acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer sheet:

• • (a) providing a film layer;
  • (b) printing an image on the film layer so as to produce an image-bearing film layer containing an image-bearing side; and
  • (c) laminating an the acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer sheet to the image-bearing side of the image-bearing film layer.

Preferably the film layer is coated on the image-bearing side and over the image with an adhesion promoter.

Claims

1. An image-bearing article comprising a film layer bearing an image, which is coated on the image-bearing side and over the image with an adhesion promoter, and which is adhered by the adhesion promoter to an acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer having a glass transition temperature of 23°

C. or less.

2. The image-bearing article of claim 1, wherein the acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer is a sheet formed of poly(vinyl acetal) with acetal groups derived from reacting poly(vinyl alcohol) with aldehydes containing 6 to 10 carbon atoms.

3. The image-bearing article of claim 2, wherein the aldehydes are selected from the group consisting of n-hexylaldehyde, 2-ethylbutyraldehyde, n-heptylaldehyde, n-octylaldehyde, n-nonylaldehyde, n-decylaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and cinnamaldehyde.

4. The image-bearing article of claim 3, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) is produced by acetalizing poly(vinyl alcohol) with aldehydes containing 6 to 10 carbon atoms to a degree of acetalization of at least 50 mole % and has an average polymerization degree of from about 1000 to about 3000.

5. The image-bearing article of claim 2, wherein the aldehydes contain 6 to 8 carbon atoms.

6. The image-bearing article of claim 2, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) contains plasticizer in an amount of about 30 to about 60 parts per hundred (pph) based on 100 parts by weight of the poly(vinyl acetal).

7. The image-bearing article of claim 1, wherein the acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer is a sheet formed of poly(vinyl acetal) with acetal groups in the range of about 8 to about 30 mole % of the total of the main chain vinyl groups.

8. The image-bearing article of claim 7, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) has acetal groups derived from reacting poly(vinyl alcohol) with aldehydes containing 4 to 6 carbon atoms.

9. The image-bearing article of claim 8, wherein the aldehydes are selected from the group consisting of n-butyl aldehyde, isobutyl aldehyde, valeraldehyde, n-hexyl aldehyde and 2-ethylbutyl aldehyde and mixtures thereof.

10. The image-bearing article of claim 8, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) has an average polymerization degree of from about 500 to about 3000.

11. The image-bearing article of claim 8, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) contains plasticizer in an amount of about 30 to about 70 parts per hundred (pph) based on 100 parts by weight of the poly(vinyl acetal).

12. The image-bearing article of claim 2, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) is poly(vinyl butyral).

The image-bearing article of claim 2, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) contains plasticizer in an amount of about 40 to about 60 parts per hundred (pph) based on 100 parts by weight of the poly(vinyl acetal) and the poly(vinyl alcohol) contains residual acetal groups in the range of about 2 to about 0.01 mole % of the total of the main chain vinyl groups.

14. The image-bearing article of claim 1, wherein the acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer is a sheet formed of poly(vinyl acetal) containing plasticizer in an amount of about 40 to about 60 parts per hundred (pph) based on 100 parts by weight of the poly(vinyl acetal).

15. The image-bearing article of claim 14, wherein the poly(vinyl acetal) is poly(vinyl butyral).

16. The image-bearing article of claim 1, further comprising a rigid sheet adhered to the acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer.

17. The image-bearing article of claim 16, wherein the rigid sheet is a sheet of glass.

18. The image-bearing article of claim 1, wherein the adhesion promoter is selected from the group consisting of silanes and poly(alkyl amine) adhesion promoters, and mixtures thereof.

19. The image-bearing article of claim 18, wherein the adhesion promoter is an aminosilane.

20. The image-bearing article of claim 18, wherein the adhesion promoter is selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl amine), poly(allyl amine) and mixtures thereof.

21. The image-bearing article of claim 1, wherein the film layer is a polyester film.

22. The image-bearing article of claim 1, wherein the film layer is a solar control film.

23. The image-bearing article of claim 1, wherein the adhesion coating has a thickness of up to about 1 ml, the acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer has a thickness of about 10 to about 250 mils, and the film has a thickness of about 0.1 to about 10 mils.

24. An image-bearing article comprising:

(a) a rigid sheet selected from the group consisting of glass, poly(carbonate), and poly(methacrylate) sheets, which is laminated to,

(b) an acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer having a glass transition temperature of 23°

C. or less, which is laminated to,

(c) a film layer having one side bearing an image, wherein an adhesion promoter selected from the group consisting of aminosilane, poly(vinyl amine), poly(allyl amine) and mixtures thereof is coated over the image and directly adhered the film layer to the first acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer.

25. The image-bearing article of claim 24, wherein the rigid sheet is a glass sheet and the film layer is a solar control film.

26. An image-bearing article comprising:

(a) a first rigid sheet selected from the group consisting of glass, poly(carbonate), and poly(methacrylate) sheets, which is laminated to,

(b) a first acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer having a glass transition temperature of 23°

C. or less, which is laminated to,

(c) a film layer having one side bearing an image, wherein an adhesion promoter selected from the group consisting of aminosilane, poly(vinyl amine), poly(allyl amine) and mixtures thereof is coated over the image and directly adhered the film layer to the first acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer, and wherein the non-image-bearing side of the film layer is laminated to,

(d) a second acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer having a glass transition temperature of 23°

C. or less, which is laminated to,

(e) a second rigid sheet selected from the group consisting of glass, poly(carbonate), and poly(methacrylate) sheets.

27. A process of preparing an image-bearing article comprising a coated image-bearing film layer, wherein the process comprises the steps of:

(a) providing a film layer;

(b) printing an image on the film layer so as to produce an image-bearing film layer containing an image-bearing side;

(c) coating an adhesion promoter on the image-bearing side and over the image to produce the coated image-bearing film layer; and

(d) laminating an acoustic poly(vinyl acetal) interlayer sheet having a glass transition temperature of 23°

C. or less to the image-bearing side of the coated image-bearing film layer.
