Abstract

A portable electronic device (100) includes a controllable skin texture surface (104) and control logic (200) that is operative to change a tactile configuration of at least a portion of the controllable skin texture surface (104) in response to at least any one (i.e., one or more) of: a received wireless signal, a battery level change condition, an incoming call, information from a proximity sensor, sound sensor, light sensor, data representing a user of the device, or data representing completion of a user authentication sequence. The controllable skin texture surface (104) may form part of a non-user interface portion or a user interface portion, such as a function key, keypad or other operational element of the device. In one example, a portable electronic device employs a controllable skin texture surface that includes a mechanical skin texture surface actuation structure and a flexible skin structure that moves in response to mechanical movement caused by the mechanical skin texture surface actuation structure to change a tactile configuration of at least a portion of the controllable skin texture surface of the device.

Claims

1. A portable electronic device comprising:

a controllable skin texture surface; and

control logic, operatively coupled to the controllable skin texture surface, operative to change a tactile configuration of at least a portion of the controllable skin texture surface in response to at least any one of;

a received wireless signal, a battery level change condition, an incoming call, information from a proximity sensor, sound sensor, light sensor, data representing a user of the device and data representing completion of a user authentication sequence.

2. The portable electronic device of claim 1 wherein the control logic is operative to control the controllable skin texture surface to change the tactile configuration of a non-user interface portion of the portable electronic device.

3. The portable electronic device of claim 1 wherein the control logic is operative to control the controllable skin texture surface to change the tactile configuration of the at least portion of the controllable skin texture surface by causing the controllable skin texture surface to pulsate.

4. The portable electronic device of claim 1 wherein the controllable skin texture surface is comprised of at least one of the following structures:

a mechanical actuation structure that is operatively coupled to a flexible skin structure that moves in response to moving of the mechanical actuation structure;

a hydraulic actuation structure that is operatively coupled to a flexible skin structure that moves in response to movement of fluid in the hydraulic actuation structure;

an expandable gas actuation structure that is operatively coupled to a flexible skin structure that moves in response to movement of gas in the expandable gas actuation structure; and

a shape memory alloy actuation structure that is operatively coupled to a flexible skin structure that moves in response to movement of a metal alloy in the shape memory alloy actuation structure.

5. The portable electronic device of claim 1 wherein the control logic is operative to control the controllable skin texture surface to change the tactile configuration of a user interface key of the portable electronic device.

6. A portable electronic device comprising:

a controllable skin texture surface comprising a skin texture surface actuation structure that is comprised of a mechanical actuation structure that is operatively coupled to a flexible skin structure that moves in response to moving of the mechanical actuation structure.

7. The portable device of claim 6 wherein the mechanical actuation structure is comprised of a sliding element operative to cause movement of portions of the flexible skin structure.

8. The portable device of claim 7 wherein the sliding element is comprised of a movable ramp structure wherein the flexible skin structure moves in response to movement of the movable ramp structure to change a tactile configuration of at least a portion of the controllable skin texture surface.

9. The portable device of claim 7 wherein the sliding element is comprised of a flexible sliding element and wherein the flexible skin structure moves in response to movement of the flexible sliding element to change a tactile configuration of at least a portion of the controllable skin texture surface.

The portable device of claim 9 wherein the mechanical actuation further comprises a substrate and wherein the flexible sliding element is interposed between the flexible skin structure and the substrate and further comprising moving elements having portions affixed to an under surface of the flexible skin structure and operative to raise portions of the flexible skin structure in response to movement of the flexible sliding element.

The portable electronic device of claim 8 wherein the movable ramp structure comprises a plurality of ramps and a cam structure operatively coupled to the plurality of ramps and operative to move at least one of the plurality of ramps in response to mechanical movement of a portion of the device.

12. The portable electronic device of claim 8 wherein the ramp structure is comprised of a plurality of individual sliding elements each comprising a plurality of ramps.

13. The portable electronic device of claim 8 wherein the flexible skin structure is comprised of a layer of flexible material having a plurality of defined changeable skin texture elements each having a portion configured to engage with the movable ramp structure.

14. The portable electronic device of claim 11 wherein the cam structure comprises ramp control elements operatively positioned to cause movement of the plurality of sliding ramp elements in response to movement of the cam structure.

15. The portable electronic device of claim 13 wherein the flexible skin structure is comprised of a plate structure that comprises openings that receive the portions configured to engage with the movable ramp structure.

16. The portable electronic device of claim 8 wherein the movable ramp structure comprises a plurality of ramps and a cam structure operatively coupled to the plurality of ramps and operative to move at least one of the plurality of ramps, and wherein the device comprises a motor coupled to engage with the cam structure and moves the cam structure in response to an electronic control signal.

17. The portable electronic device of claim 11 comprising a movable housing portion that is operatively coupled with the cam structure such that mechanical movement of the housing portion causes movement of the cam structure.

The portable electronic device of claim 8 wherein the moveable ramp structure comprises wedge shaped elements and a moveable ramp structure in operative engagement with the wedge shaped elements such that movement of the ramp structure causes movement of the wedge shaped elements and movement of the flexible skin structure.

19. The portable electronic device of claim 18 wherein a wedge shaped element is comprised of an anchored portion and a movable wedge section that pivots with respect to the anchored portion.

20. The portable electronic device of claim 8 comprising a substrate interposed between the flexible skin structure and the movable ramp structure and a touch sensor supported by the substrate and located between at least to moveable portions of the flexible skin structure.

21. A handheld wireless device comprising:

a wireless telephone subsystem;

a display operatively coupled to the wireless telephone subsystem;

a controllable skin texture surface; and

control logic, operatively coupled to the controllable skin texture surface, operative to change a tactile configuration of at least a portion of the controllable skin texture surface in response to at least any one of;

a received wireless signal, a low battery condition indication, an incoming call, a proximity sensor, sound sensor, light sensor, data representing a user of the device and data representing completion of a user authentication sequence.

22. The handheld wireless device of claim 21 comprising a user interface operatively coupled to the wireless telephone subsystem and that comprises the controllable skin texture surface and wherein the control logic is operative to control the controllable skin texture surface to change the tactile configuration of a user interface key of the user interface.

23. The handheld wireless device of claim 21 wherein the controllable skin texture surface is comprised of a skin texture surface actuation structure that is comprised of a movable ramp structure and a flexible skin structure that moves in response to moving of the movable ramp structure to change a tactile configuration of at least a portion of the controllable skin texture surface.

24. The handheld wireless device of claim 23 wherein the movable ramp structure comprises a plurality of ramps and a cam structure operatively coupled to the plurality of ramps and operative to move at least one of the plurality of ramps in response to mechanical movement of a portion of the device.

25. The handheld wireless device of claim 23 wherein the movable ramp structure is comprised of a plurality of individual sliding elements each comprising a plurality of ramps.

26. The handheld wireless device of claim 23 wherein the flexible skin structure is comprised of a layer of flexible material having a plurality of defined changeable skin texture elements each having a portion configured to engage with the movable ramp structure.

27. The handheld wireless device of claim 25 wherein the cam structure comprises ramp control elements operatively positioned to cause movement of the plurality of individual sliding ramp elements in response to movement of the cam structure.

28. The handheld wireless device of claim 26 wherein the flexible skin structure is comprised of a plate structure that comprises openings that receive the portions configured to engage with the movable ramp structure.

29. The handheld wireless device of claim 23 wherein the movable ramp structure comprises a plurality of ramps and a cam structure operatively coupled to the plurality of ramps and operative to move at least one of the plurality of ramps, and wherein the device comprises a motor coupled to engage with the cam structure and moves the cam structure in response to an electronic control signal.

30. The handheld wireless device of claim 24 comprising a movable housing portion that is operatively coupled to the cam structure such that movement of the housing portion causes movement of the cam structure.
