Abstract

The disclosure describes a system that measures the distance between one or more electrodes and tissue of a patient, and controls one or more parameters of the stimulation delivered to the tissue by the electrodes based on the measured distance. The system controls the measurement of the distance between the electrodes and the tissue as a function of activity of the patient. The system uses, for example, a piezoelectric transducer to sense activity of the patient, and may determine whether or how frequently to measure the distance between electrodes and tissue based on the sensed physical activity. A piezoelectric transducer may be used both to sense activity and to measure the distance between the electrodes and the tissue.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

sensing activity of a patient;

determining a measurement frequency that is based on the sensed activity;

measuring, at the measurement frequency, a distance between an electrode and a tissue to which the electrode delivers stimulation; and

adjusting a parameter of the stimulation based on the measured distance.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the stimulation parameter comprises adjusting at least one of a pulse amplitude, a pulse width, or a pulse rate.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a piezoelectric transducer.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrode is located on a lead, and sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a sensor located on the lead.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein ultrasonically measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance using a piezoelectric transducer.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via the piezoelectric transducer.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a threshold, and wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance at the measurement frequency when the sensed activity exceeds the threshold.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a plurality of thresholds, each of the thresholds associated with a respective one of a plurality measurement frequencies, and wherein determining the measurement frequency comprises determining the measurement frequency based on the comparison.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the tissue comprises neural tissue and the stimulation comprises neurostimulation.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the tissue comprises tissue of the spinal cord.

12. A method comprising:

sensing activity of a patient;

measuring a distance between an electrode and tissue to which the electrode delivers stimulation based on the sensed activity; and

adjusting a parameter of the stimulation based on a change in the measured distance between the electrode and the tissue.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein adjusting the stimulation parameter comprises adjusting at least one of a pulse amplitude, a pulse width, or a pulse rate based on the change in the measured distance between the electrode and the tissue.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a piezoelectric transducer.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the electrode is located on a lead, and sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a sensor located on the lead.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein ultrasonically measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance using a piezoelectric transducer.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via the piezoelectric transducer.

19. The method of claim 12, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a threshold, and wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance when the sensed activity exceeds the threshold.

20. The method of claim 12, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a plurality of thresholds, each of the thresholds associated with a respective one of a plurality measurement frequencies, and wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance at one of the plurality of frequencies based on the comparison.

21. The method of claim 12, wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance at a frequency determined as a function of the sensed activity.

22. The method of claim 12, wherein the tissue is neural tissue and the stimulation is neurostimulation.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the tissue is tissue of the spinal cord.

24. A system comprising:

means for sensing physical activity of a patient;

means for determining a measurement frequency that is based on the sensed physical activity;

means for measuring, at the measurement frequency, the distance between an electrode and a tissue to which the electrode delivers stimulation based on the sensed physical activity; and

means for adjusting a parameter of the stimulation based on the measured distance.

25. A system comprising:

means for sensing activity of a patient;

means for measuring a distance between an electrode and tissue to which the electrode delivers stimulation based on the sensed activity; and

means for adjusting a parameter of the stimulation based on a change in the measured distance between the electrode and the tissue.
