Abstract

Advertising, entertainment or other content is targeted to a particular node of an addressable network based on user information. Such addressable networks may include the Internet, certain television networks or other networks where content can be addressed to specific nodes. The user information may include financial information, product or service preference information, and user contact information regarding a user of the targeted node. In one implementation, targeted content is presented during waiting time of an Internet session. The corresponding process involves monitoring (416) a user node to identify a website access request, accessing (418) a previously stored message said, selecting (432) a message from the message set and displaying or playing back (434) the selected message.

Claims

1. A system for providing node targeted content in an addressable network, the system comprising:

a database configured to store at least one targeted message for transmission to a network user; and

a processing system configured to process computer-executable code, the computer-executable code causing the processing system to perform the operations of;

receiving a request to connect to a network node, the request to connect to the network node including the request to receive data;

selecting a targeted message from the database based on user information obtained from the network user and other criteria; and

initiating the providing of the selected targeted message to the network user.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the other criteria includes the amount of data needed to provide the selected targeted message to the network user.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the other criteria includes the amount of time needed to provide the selected targeted message to the network user.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the network is the internet.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the request to connect is a request to receive the data from a website over the internet.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one targeted message is chosen from a group comprising:

advertising content;

product information; and

a public service announcement.

providing for the display of the selected targeted message to the network user.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the displaying of the targeted message to the network user is initiated prior to the network user receiving the requested data from the network node.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein a portion of the selected targeted message is provided to the network user prior to the requested data.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the database is located at a user node.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the database is located at a server.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing system is located at a server.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing system is located at a user node.

14. A method for providing node targeted content in an addressable network, the method comprising:

accessing a database, the database configured to store at least one targeted message;

receiving a request to connect to a network node, the request to connect to the network node including the request to receive data;

selecting a message from the database based on user information obtained from a network user and other criteria; and

initiating the transmission of the selected message to the network user.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the other criteria includes the amount of data needed to provide the selected targeted message to the network user.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the other criteria includes the amount of time needed to provide the selected targeted message to the network user.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the request to connect further comprises:

requesting to receive data from a website over the internet.

18. The method of claim 14 further comprising:

initiating the display of the selected targeted message to the network user.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the initiating of the display of the selected targeted message occurs prior to the network user receiving the requested data from the network node.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein a portion of the selected targeted message is provided to the network user prior to the requested data.
