Abstract

Methods and systems for docking a laptop with Ethernet A/V bridging to guarantee services are disclosed and may include interfacing a portable computing device with a docking station using an Ethernet interface, and utilizing audio/video (AV) bridging for communicating data between the portable computing device and one or more devices coupled to the docking station. AV bridging may be utilized based on latency requirements of the data communication. The interfacing may include directly coupling an Ethernet port of the docking station to an Ethernet port of the portable computing device. Alternatively, the interfacing may include coupling an Ethernet port of the docking station to an Ethernet port of the portable computing device via an Ethernet cable. The portable computing device may be powered via the Ethernet interface, and may utilize power over Ethernet protocol. The docking station may include a passive or active docking station.

Claims

1. A method for network communication, the method comprising:

interfacing a portable computing device with a docking station using one or more Ethernet interfaces; and

communicating data between said portable computing device and one or more devices coupled to said docking station utilizing audio/video (AV) bridging over said one or more Ethernet interfaces.

2. The method according to claim 1, comprising utilizing said AV bridging based on latency requirements of said data communication.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said interfacing comprises directly coupling an Ethernet port of said docking station to an Ethernet port of said portable computing device.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said interfacing comprises coupling an Ethernet port of said docking station to an Ethernet port of said portable computing device via an Ethernet cable.

5. The method according to claim 1, comprising powering said portable computing device via said Ethernet interface.

6. The method according to claim 1, comprising powering said portable computing device via said Ethernet interface utilizing power over Ethernet protocol.

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein said docking station comprises a passive docking station.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said docking station comprises an active docking station.

9. The method according to claim 1, comprising interfacing a display to said portable computing device utilizing an Ethernet interface while said portable computing device is coupled to said docking station.

10. The method according to claim 1, comprising coupling a display to said docking station via one of said Ethernet interfaces.

11. A system for network communication, the system comprising:

one or more circuits that enable interfacing a portable computing device with a docking station using one or more Ethernet interfaces; and

said one or more circuits enable communicating data between said portable computing device and one or more devices coupled to said docking station utilizing audio/video (AV) bridging.

12. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits enable said AV bridging based on latency requirements of said data communication.

13. The system according to claim 11, wherein an Ethernet port of said docking station is directly coupled to an Ethernet port of said portable computing device.

14. The system according to claim 11, wherein an Ethernet port of said docking station is coupled to an Ethernet port of said portable computing device via an Ethernet cable

15. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits enable powering said portable computing device via said Ethernet interface.

16. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits enable powering said portable computing device via said Ethernet interface utilizing power over Ethernet protocol.

17. The system according to claim 11, wherein said docking station comprises a passive docking station.

18. The system according to claim 11, wherein said docking station comprises an active docking station.

19. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits enable interfacing a display to said portable computing device utilizing an Ethernet interface while said portable computing device is coupled to said docking station.

20. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits enable coupling a display to said docking station via one of said one or more Ethernet interfaces.
