Abstract

Dynamic routing protocol selection capability may be provided within a MANET without the cost of position and/or motion sensing or calculating hardware. The method manages and controls the discovery and maintenance of routes in the MANET, and may include determining additions and drop outs over time of neighboring nodes in communication with a wireless mobile node, and generating a motion-inferred link metric based upon the additions and drop outs over time. A routing protocol may be selected from a plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the motion-inferred link metric, and routes may be discovered with the selected routing protocol to other wireless mobile nodes within the network.

Claims

1. A method for managing and controlling the discovery and maintenance of routes in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) comprising a plurality of wireless mobile nodes, the method comprising:

determining, at at least one wireless mobile node, additions and drop outs over time of neighboring nodes in communication with the at least one wireless mobile node;

generating a motion-inferred link metric based upon the additions and drop outs over time;

selecting a routing protocol from a plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the motion-inferred link metric; and

discovering routes, with the selected routing protocol, from the at least one wireless mobile node to other wireless mobile nodes within the MANET.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the MANET operates in accordance with a multilayer protocol hierarchy including a network layer and a data link layer at each wireless mobile node;

wherein determining additions and drop outs over time of neighboring nodes in communication with the at least one wireless mobile node is performed at the data link layer; and

wherein generating the motion-inferred link metric and selecting the routing protocol are performed at the network layer.

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein selecting the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols comprises selecting the routing protocol independent of any position data.

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein selecting the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols comprises selecting the routing protocol also based upon at least one of overhead, throughput, and convergence time of the plurality of possible routing protocols.

5. The method according to claim 1 further comprising calculating an overhead cost for each of the plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the motion-inferred link metric;

and wherein selecting the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols comprises selecting the routing protocol based upon the calculated overhead cost.

The method according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of possible routing protocols includes at least one of Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol, OSPF protocol with MPNET extensions, Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Routing Information Protocol (RIP), Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol, Overlapping Relays (OR) protocol, and MANET Designated Routers (MDR) protocol.

7. The method according to claim 1 wherein determining additions and drop outs at the at least one wireless mobile node comprises determining additions and drop outs for the plurality of wireless mobile nodes;

and wherein the routing protocol is selected for the MANET.

8. The method according to claim 1 wherein neighboring nodes are within one hop from the at least one wireless mobile node.

9. A method for managing and controlling the discovery and maintenance of routes in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) comprising a plurality of wireless mobile nodes, the network operating in accordance with a multilayer protocol hierarchy including a network layer and a data link layer at each wireless mobile node, the method comprising:

at the data link layer of at least one wireless mobile node, monitoring additions and drop outs over time of neighboring nodes in communication with the at least one wireless mobile node;

at the network layer of the at least one mobile node, calculating a rate of change of neighboring nodes based upon the monitoring;

at the network layer of the at least one mobile node, discovering routes, with a first routing protocol, from the at least one wireless mobile node to other wireless mobile nodes within the MANET; and

at the network layer of the at least one mobile node, selecting a second routing protocol, different from the first routing protocol, based upon the calculated rate of change.

10. The method according to claim 9 wherein selecting the second routing protocol comprises selecting the second routing protocol independent of any position data.

11. The method according to claim 9 wherein selecting the second routing protocol comprises selecting the second routing protocol also based upon at least one of overhead, throughput, and convergence time of a plurality of possible routing protocols.

12. The method according to claim 9 further comprising calculating an overhead cost for each of a plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the calculated rate of change;

and wherein selecting the second routing protocol comprises selecting the second routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the calculated overhead cost.

13. A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) comprising:

a plurality of wireless mobile nodes, each wireless mobile node comprising a controller and a wireless communications device cooperating therewith to

determine additions and drop outs over time of neighboring nodes in communication therewith,

generate a motion-inferred link metric based upon the additions and drop outs over time,

select a routing protocol from a plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the motion-inferred link metric, and

discover routes, with the selected routing protocol, to other wireless mobile nodes within the MANET.

14. The MANET according to claim 13, wherein the MANET operates in accordance with a multilayer protocol hierarchy including a network layer and a data link layer at each wireless mobile node;

and wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate at the data link layer to determine the additions and drop outs of neighboring nodes, and cooperate at the network layer to generate the motion-inferred link metric and select the routing protocol.

15. The MANET according to claim 13, wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate to select the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols independent of any position data.

The MANET according to claim 13, wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate to select the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols also based upon at least one of overhead, throughput, and convergence time of the plurality of possible routing protocols.

17. The MANET according to claim 13, wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate to calculate an overhead cost for each of the plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the motion-inferred link metric, and cooperate to select the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the calculated overhead cost.

18. A wireless node for operation with a plurality of wireless mobile nodes within a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET), the wireless node comprising:

a controller and a wireless communications device cooperating therewith to

determine additions and drop outs over time of neighboring nodes in communication therewith,

generate a motion-inferred link metric based upon the additions and drop outs over time,

select a routing protocol from a plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the motion-inferred link metric, and

discover routes, with the selected routing protocol, to other wireless mobile nodes within the network.

19. The wireless mobile node according to claim 18, wherein the MANET operates in accordance with a multilayer protocol hierarchy including a network layer and a data link layer at each wireless mobile node;

and wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate at the data link layer to determine the additions and drop outs of neighboring nodes, and cooperate at the network layer to generate the motion-inferred link metric and select the routing protocol.

20. The wireless mobile node according to claim 18, wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate to select the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols independent of any geoposition data.

The wireless mobile node according to claim 18, wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate to select the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols also based upon at least one of overhead, throughput, and convergence time of the plurality of possible routing protocols.

22. The wireless mobile node according to claim 18, wherein the controller and wireless communications device cooperate to calculate an overhead cost for each of the plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the motion-inferred link metric, and cooperate to select the routing protocol from the plurality of possible routing protocols based upon the calculated overhead cost.
