Abstract

A cable connector assembly includes an insulator (1), a plurality of conductive terminals (2) held in the insulator, a plurality of wires (4), a spacer (3) and a metal shell (6, 7). Each wire comprises an inner conductor (41) conductively connecting with the terminals, and at least one of the wires is a coaxial cable (4a) which has a shielding braid layer (43) enclosing the corresponding inner conductor. The spacer is mounted on the insulator and used for supporting the wires. The spacer comprises an inner surface with thereof a plurality of slots (31) for receiving the responding wires and an outer surface opposite to the inner surface, and a through-hole (32) is formed through the inner and outer surfaces. The metal shell is mounted on and covers the insulator. The spring finger (75) is formed integrate with the metal shell and extends inwards, and the spring finger passes through the through-hole to electrically connect with the shielding braid of the coaxial cable.

Claims

1. A cable connector assembly, comprising:

an insulator holding a plurality of conductive terminals therein;

a plurality of wires each comprising an inner conductor conductively connecting with the terminal, at least one of the wires being a coaxial cable which has a shielding braid enclosing the corresponding inner conductor;

a spacer mounted on the insulator and used for supporting the wires, the spacer comprising an inner surface with thereof a plurality of slots for receiving the responding wires and an outer surface opposite to the inner surface, a through-hole formed through the inner and outer surfaces; and

a metal shell mounted on and covering the insulator, wherein a spring finger is integrally formed with the metal shell and extends inwards to the spacer, and the spring finger passes through the through-hole to electrically connect with the shielding braid of the coaxial cable.

2. The cable connector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of wires comprises at least two coaxial cables, and all the coaxial cables electrically connects with each other through a grounding bar.

3. The cable connector assembly according to claim 2, wherein the spring finger of the metal shell abuts against the grounding bar so as to electrically connect with the shielding braids of the coaxial cables.

The cable connector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the insulator comprises a tongue plate for holding the terminals, a pair of guide posts on both sides of the tongue plate to guide the insulator to mate with a complementary connector, and a pair of arm portions extending backwards beyond the tongue plate from the guide posts;

the spacer is mounted between the pair of arm portions at rear of the tongue plate.

5. The cable connector assembly according to claim 4, wherein the metal shell covers the slots of the spacer.

6. The cable connector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the insulator comprises a tongue plate for holding the terminals, a pair of arm portions extending backwards from both sides of the tongue plate, and a pair of receiving holes disposed on a top wall of the arm portions;

the spacer is mounted in the receiving holes along the top-to-bottom direction.

7. The cable connector assembly according to claim 6, wherein the metal shell covers the spacer.

8. The cable connector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the metal shell comprises a pair of opposite top and bottom shells, the top shell and bottom shells both contact the shielding braid of the coaxial cable.

The cable connector assembly according to claim 1, wherein the insulator comprises a tongue plate for holding the terminals and a pair of arm portions extending backwards from both sides of the tongue plate, inner surfaces of the arm portions and the tongue plate defining a space for receiving the spacer, and a pair of latches are mounted on outer surfaces of the arm portions.

10. A cable connector assembly, comprising:

an insulator comprising a tongue plate and a pair of arm portions extending backwards from both sides of the tongue plate, the pair of arm portion extending beyond the tongue plate to form a space between the pair of the arm portions;

a plurality of conductive terminals held in the tongue plate;

a plurality of wires electrically connecting with the corresponding terminals;

a spacer mounted on the insulator and received in said space of the insulator, the spacer forming a plurality of slots on the top surface thereof for receiving the plurality of wires; and

a metal shell mounted on the insulator and covering the slots of the spacer.

11. The cable connector assembly according to claim 10, wherein a pair of latches are mounted on outer surfaces of the arm portions.

12. The cable connector assembly according to claim 10, wherein a spring finger is formed integrally with the metal shell and contact the wire.

13. The cable connector assembly according to claim 12, wherein another metal shell is mounted on the insulator and covers the bottom surface of the spacer.

14. A cable connector assembly comprising:

an insulative housing extending along a longitudinal direction and defining a plurality of passageways extending along a front-to-back direction perpendicular to said front-to-back direction;

a plurality of contacts disposed in the corresponding passageways, respectively;

a plurality of wires each defining an inner conductor, an inner insulator, an outer conductor and an outer insulator in sequence, said inner conductor being mechanically and electrically connected to the corresponding contacts, respectively;

an insulative spacer assembled to the housing and defining a plurality of slots each receiving the corresponding wires;

a grounding bar sandwiched between the spacer and the outer conductors of said wires; and

a metallic shell assembled to the housing and covering said spacer with a plurality of spring arms extending through corresponding through holes in the spacer to mechanically and electrically contact the grounding bar.

15. The cable connector assembly as claimed in claim 14, wherein the grounding bar is assembled to the housing.

16. The cable connector assembly as claimed in claim 14, wherein the slots receive the inner insulators of the corresponding wires, respectively.

17. The cable connector assembly as claimed in claim 14, wherein the housing includes a plurality of slits in alignment with the corresponding slots in said front-to-back direction, each of said slits receiving the corresponding contact and the inner conductor of the corresponding wires therein.

18. The cable connector assembly as claimed in claim 14, wherein said spacer defines a protrusion which couples to a notch in the housing for orientation consideration during assembling the spacer to the housing.

19. The cable connector assembly as claimed in claim 14, further including another metallic shell covering said wires opposite to said shell, and said another shell includes a plurality of spring fingers abutting against the outer conductors of the corresponding wires.

20. The cable connector assembly as claimed in claim 19, wherein said spring fingers are aligned with the corresponding spring fingers, respectively, in a vertical direction perpendicular to the front-to-back direction and said longitudinal direction.
