Abstract

Photocosmetic device for use in medical or non-medical environments (e.g., a home, barbershop, or spa), which can be used for a variety of tissue treatments. Radiation is delivered to the tissue via optical systems designed to pattern the radiation and project the radiation to a particular depth. The device has a variety of cooling systems including phase change cooling solids and liquids to cool treated skin and the radiation sources. Contact sensors and motion sensor may be used to enhance treatment. The device may be modular to facilitate manufacture and replacement of parts.

Claims

1. A photocosmetic device, comprising:

a handpiece adapted for application of radiation to the skin,

a motion sensor coupled to said handpiece to determine a speed of the handpiece as it is moved over the skin, and

a controller coupled to the handpiece and responsive to the motion sensor, said controller adjusting a radiation level applied to the skin based on the speed of the handpiece over the skin.

2. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said controller is configured to terminate application of radiation to the skin when the speed of the handpiece lies outside an acceptable range.

3. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, further comprising a radiation source contained in said handpiece.

4. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said controller is configured to apply a feedback control signal to said source so as to adjust intensity of radiation generated by said source in response to the speed of the handpiece.

5. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor is selected from the group consisting of a mechanical sensor, an optical sensor, and electrical sensor and a thermal sensor.

6. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor comprises

a wheel having a plurality of perforations along a perimeter thereof, said wheel being adapted to rotate in response to movement of said handpiece over skin,

a radiation source disposed on one side of the wheel and adapted to direct radiation to said perimeter of the wheel,

a radiation detector disposed on an opposed side of the wheel so as to detect radiation passing through said perforations as the wheel rotates, thereby generating a plurality of detection signal pulses, and

a controller in communication with the detector, said controller correlating a temporal rate of said signal pulses to the handpiece speed.

7. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor comprises

a wheel adapted to rotate in response to movement of the handpiece over skin, and

an electric motor coupled to the wheel and adapted to generate a voltage in response to rotation of the wheel, said voltage being proportional to the speed of the handpiece over skin.

8. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor comprises

a radiation source,

at least an optical fiber having a plurality of split proximal ends and a distal end, said fiber being optically coupled at one of said proximal ends to the radiation source so as to apply radiation from the source at its distal end to the skin,

a detector optically coupled to another one of said proximal ends to detect radiation reflected or scattered from the skin in response to said applied radiation, wherein an output of said detector is modulated due to semi-periodic skin structures at a rate dependent on the speed of the handpiece, and

a controller in communication with the detector and adapted to calculate the speed of the handpiece based on said modulated detector output.

9. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor comprises

a radiation source,

a radiation-transmitting fiber optically coupled at a distal end to said source to receive radiation therefrom and optically coupled at a proximal end to skin to apply radiation thereto,

a radiation-receiving fiber optically coupled at a proximal end to the skin to receive at least a portion of said applied radiation that is scattered by the skin,

a detector coupled to a distal end of said radiation-receiving fiber to detect radiation received by that fiber, and

a controller in communication with said detector, said controller being adapted to determine a speed of said handpiece based on radiation detected by said detector.

10. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor comprises

at least two thermal sensors mounted to said handpiece, said sensors being separated by a distance along a direction of handpiece motion along the skin such that one sensor monitors a temperature of untreated skin and the other sensor measures temperature of skin exposed to said radiation,

a controller in communication with said sensors, said controller determining a speed of the handpiece based on temperature difference between the two sensors.

11. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor comprises

a heat source adapted for heating a skin portion,

a thermal sensor mounted to said handpiece at distance from the heat source along a direction of handpiece motion and adapted to measure skin temperature,

wherein a skin temperature measured by the sensor is indicative of the speed of handpiece movement over the skin.

12. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, further comprises a indicator for indicating whether a speed of movement of said handpiece over the skin lies inside or outside an acceptable range.

13. The photocosmetic device of claim 12, wherein said indicator is selected from the group consisting of a visual indicator and a tactile indicator.

14. The photocosmetic device of claim 1, wherein said motion sensor comprises a sound sensor.

15. The photocosmetic device of claim 14, wherein said sound sensor comprises a Doppler-shift sensor.
