Abstract

A method and apparatus for dispatching messages in a distributed computing system. A dispatcher receives a message. The dispatcher examines the message to determine whether the message is addressed to the dispatcher. If the message is addressed to the dispatcher, the dispatcher performs an action based on the message. If the message is not addressed to the dispatcher, the dispatcher passes on the message to a destination.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for a dispatcher in a service oriented architecture (SOA), comprising:

receiving a message;

examining the message to determine whether the message is addressed to the dispatcher;

if the message is addressed to the dispatcher, performing an action at the dispatcher based on the message; and

if the message is not addressed to the dispatcher, passing on the message to a destination.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

if the message is not addressed to the dispatcher, modifying the message before passing it on.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein modifying the message includes at least one of appending data to or removing data from the message.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the action includes one of reconfiguring the dispatcher and generating a response message that includes information stored in the dispatcher.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the SOA includes an enterprise service bus (ESB), the ESB having services that are managed using an infrastructure, and wherein the dispatcher is managed using the same infrastructure.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the dispatcher is a service in the ESB.

7. A machine-accessible medium including instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform a computer implemented method for a dispatcher in a service oriented architecture (SOA) comprising:

receiving a message;

examining the message to determine whether the message is addressed to the dispatcher;

if the message is addressed to the dispatcher, performing an action at the dispatcher based on the message; and

if the message is not addressed to the dispatcher, passing on the message to a destination.

8. The machine-accessible medium of claim 7, the method further comprising:

if the message is not addressed to the dispatcher, modifying the message before passing it on.

9. The machine-accessible medium of claim 8, wherein modifying the message includes at least one of appending data to or removing data from the message.

10. The machine-accessible medium of claim 7, wherein the action includes one of reconfiguring the dispatcher and generating a response message that includes information stored in the dispatcher.

11. The machine-accessible medium of claim 7, wherein the SOA includes an enterprise service bus (ESB), the ESB having services that are managed using an infrastructure, and wherein the dispatcher is managed using the same infrastructure.

12. The machine-accessible medium of claim 11, wherein the dispatcher is a service in the ESB.

13. A distributed computing system comprising:

a dispatcher connected with a network and with at least one of a client and a service, the dispatcher to receive a message, to examine the message to determine whether the message is addressed to the dispatcher, to perform an action based on the message if the message is addressed to the dispatcher, and to pass on the message to the network or to at least one of the client and the service if the message is not addressed to the dispatcher.

14. The distributed computing system of claim 13, wherein the dispatcher further to perform an operation to modify the message before passing it on if the message is not addressed to the dispatcher.

15. The distributed computing system of claim 14, further comprising:

an additional dispatcher connected with the network and with at least one of an additional client and an additional service, wherein the additional dispatcher to receive the message, to examine the message to determine if the message is addressed to the additional dispatcher, to perform an action based on the message if the message is addressed to the additional dispatcher, and to perform a reciprocal operation to modify the message before passing it on to the network or to at least one of the client and the service if the message is not addressed to the dispatcher, wherein the reciprocal operation reverses a message modification achieved by the operation.

16. The distributed computing system of claim 14, wherein the operation to modify the message performs at least one of appending data to or removing data from the message.

17. The distributed computing system of claim 13, wherein the action includes one of reconfiguring the dispatcher and generating a response message that includes information stored in the dispatcher.

18. The distributed computing system of claim 13, wherein the distributed computing system includes an enterprise service bus (ESB), the ESB having services that are managed using an infrastructure, and wherein the dispatcher is managed using the same infrastructure.

19. The distributed computing system of claim 18, wherein the dispatcher is a service in the ESB.
