Abstract

A prosthetic system for implantation between upper and lower vertebrae comprises an upper joint component. The upper joint component comprises an upper contact surface and an upper articulation surface. The system further includes a lower joint component. The lower joint component comprises a lower contact surface and a lower articulation surface configured to movably engage the upper articulation surface to form an articulating joint. The articulating joint is adapted for implantation within a disc space between the upper and lower vertebrae, allowing the upper and lower vertebrae to move relative to one another. The system further includes a bridge component extending posteriorly from one of either the upper or lower joint components and from the disc space. The bridge component has a distal end opposite the one of the either upper or lower joint components. The distal end of the bridge component comprises a connection component adapted to receive a fastener.

Claims

1. A prosthetic system for implantation between upper and lower vertebrae, the system comprising:

an upper joint component comprising an upper contact surface and an upper articulation surface;

a lower joint component comprising a lower contact surface and a lower articulation surface configured to movably engage the upper articulation surface to form an articulating joint, wherein the articulating joint is adapted for implantation within a disc space between the upper and lower vertebrae, allowing the upper and lower vertebrae to move relative to one another; and

a bridge component extending posteriorly from one of either the upper or lower joint components and from the disc space, the bridge component having a distal end opposite the one of the either upper or lower joint components, wherein the distal end of the bridge component comprises a connection component adapted to receive a fastener.

2. The prosthetic system of claim 1 further comprising a first bumper disposed anteriorly of the lower articulation surface and adapted to contact the upper joint component to prevent dislocation of the articulating joint during a flexion motion of the articulating joint.

3. The prosthetic system of claim 2 further comprising a second bumper disposed posteriorly of the lower articulation surface and adapted to contact the upper joint component to prevent dislocation of the articulating joint during an extension motion of the articulating joint.

4. The prosthetic system of claim 1 further comprising a keel extending from the upper contact surface, the keel comprising a first elongated section having a first height and a second elongated section having a second height, wherein the second height is greater than the first height.

5. The prosthetic system of claim 4 wherein the keel extends to a posterior edge of the either of the upper or lower surface.

6. The prosthetic system of claim 4 wherein the second elongated section is approximately one third of the keel'"'"'s length.

7. The prosthetic system of claim 4 wherein the second elongated section of the keel comprises a sharpened leading edge.

8. The prosthetic system of claim 7 wherein the sharpened leading edge is undercut.

9. The prosthetic system of claim 1 further comprising a posterior tab extending from the lower joint component, the posterior tab including a face adapted to contact a posterior surface of a cylindrical vertebral body of either the upper or lower vertebrae.

10. The prosthetic system of claim 9 wherein a keel extends anteriorly from the posterior tab.

11. The prosthetic system of claim 1 wherein the upper articulation surface is a spherical recess.

12. The prosthetic system of claim 1 wherein the lower articulation surface is a spherical dome.

13. The prosthetic system of claim 1 wherein the fastener is a bone screw.

14. The prosthetic system of claim 1 wherein the connection component further comprises a locking clip adapted to extend across at least a portion of the fastener.

15. The prosthetic system of claim 14 wherein the locking clip is a generally C-shaped bracket.

16. A prosthetic system for implantation between upper and lower vertebrae, the system comprising:

an upper joint component comprising an upper contact surface and an upper articulation surface; and

a lower joint component comprising

a lower contact surface,

a lower articulation surface configured to movably engage the upper articulation surface to form an articulating joint wherein the articulating joint is configured for implantation within a disc space between the upper and lower vertebrae, allowing the upper and lower vertebrae to move relative to one another, and

a first stop spaced apart from and disposed anteriorly of the lower articulation surface and adapted to contact the upper joint component to prevent dislocation of the articulating joint.

17. The prosthetic system of claim 16 further comprising a bridge component extending posteriorly from one of the upper or lower joint components and from the disc space, the bridge component having a distal end opposite the one of the upper or lower joint components, wherein the distal end of the bridge component comprises a connection component adapted to receive a fastener.

18. A prosthetic system for implantation between upper and lower vertebrae, the system comprising:

an upper anterior joint component comprising an upper surface adapted to engage the upper vertebra and an upper articulation surface;

a lower anterior joint component comprising a lower surface adapted to engage the lower vertebra and a lower articulation surface configured to movably engage the upper articulation surface to form an articulating joint allowing the upper and lower vertebrae to move relative to one another, wherein the articulating joint is disposed within a disc space between the upper and lower vertebrae;

an upper bridge component extending posteriorly from the upper anterior joint component and posteriorly from the disc space;

a lower bridge component extending posteriorly from the lower anterior joint component and posteriorly from the disc space; and

a connection component in one of either the upper or lower bridges adapted to receive a fastener and direct the fastener into the respective upper or lower vertebra.

19. The prosthetic system of claim 18 wherein the connection component is in the lower bridge.

20. The prosthetic system of claim 18 further comprising:

an upper posterior joint component extending from a distal end of the upper bridge component; and

a lower posterior joint component extending from a distal end of the lower bridge component;

wherein the lower posterior joint extends through the upper posterior joint component to form a posterior joint.

21. The prosthetic system of claim 20 wherein the upper posterior joint component comprises a pair of arms that form an opening to receive the lower posterior joint component.

22. The prosthetic system of claim 18 further comprising a keel extending from the upper surface, the keel comprising a first elongated section having a first height and a second elongated section having a second height, wherein the second height is greater than the first height.

23. The prosthetic system of claim 22 wherein the keel extends to a posterior edge of the either of the upper surface.

24. The prosthetic system of claim 22 wherein the second elongated section of the keel comprises a sharpened leading edge.

25. The prosthetic system of claim 24 wherein the sharpened leading edge is undercut.

26. The prosthetic system of claim 18 wherein the upper articulation surface is a spherical recess.

27. The prosthetic system of claim 18 wherein the lower articulation surface is a spherical dome.

28. A surgical method comprising:

removing at least a portion of a natural intervertebral disc from between upper and lower vertebrae to create a disc space;

removing a portion of at least one articular process from either the upper or lower vertebrae;

assembling a joint of a first vertebral arthroplasty device by placing an upper component of the first vertebral arthroplasty device in articulating engagement with a lower component of the first vertebral arthroplasty device;

inserting the joint of the first vertebral arthroplasty device into the disc space;

positioning a posterior extension of the lower component outside of the disc space; and

attaching the posterior extension of the lower component to the lower vertebra with a bone fastener;

wherein a first bumper component at an anterior end of the lower component limits dislocation of the joint of the first vertebral arthroplasty device.

29. The surgical method of claim 28 further comprising:

assembling a joint of a second vertebral arthroplasty device; and

inserting the joint of the second vertebral arthroplasty device into the disc space and in bilateral relationship with the first vertebral arthroplasty device.

30. The surgical method of claim 28 further comprising:

cutting a channel in at least one of either the upper or lower vertebrae to receive a keel extension of the first vertebral arthroplasty device.

31. The surgical method of claim 30 wherein the cutting is performed by a sharpened leading edge of the keel extension.

32. The surgical method of claim 28 wherein a second bumper component, between the joint of the first vertebral arthroplasty device and the posterior extension, limits dislocation of the joint of the first vertebral arthroplasty device.

33. The surgical method of claim 28 further comprises positioning a tab extending from the superior component of the first vertebral arthroplasty device against a surface of a vertebral body portion of the upper vertebra.

34. The surgical method of claim 33 wherein the step of positioning a tab comprises visualizing the tab engaging the surface of the vertebral body to locate the center of rotation of the joint of the first vertebral arthroplasty device in a predetermined location.

35. A spinal prosthesis system comprising:

a pair of bilateral prosthetic devices adapted for side by side placement within an intervertebral disc space between upper and lower vertebrae, wherein each of the pair of bilateral prosthetic devices includes

an upper joint component comprising a concave upper articulation surface, and an aperture adapted to receive a bone fixation device;

a lower joint component comprising an inner surface, a convex lower articulation surface protruding from the inner surface and configured to movably engage the concave upper articulation surface to form an articulating joint, and an aperture adapted to receive a bone fixation device.

36. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 35 further comprising:

a protrusion extending from the concave upper articulation surface and sized to movably engage a recess in the convex lower articulation surface.

37. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 36 wherein the protrusion is cylindrical.

38. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 36 wherein the protrusion has an arched shape.

39. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 35 further comprising:

a protrusion extending from the inner surface of the lower joint component and sized to movably engage a recess in the upper joint component.

40. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 39 wherein the protrusion is located anteriorly of the articulating joint.

41. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 39 wherein the protrusion is located posteriorly of the articulating joint.

42. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 39 wherein the protrusion is formed from an elastomeric material.

43. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 35 wherein the convex lower articulation surface is integrally formed with the inner surface of the lower joint component.

44. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 35 wherein a washer extends at least partially between the convex lower articulation surface and the inner surface of the lower joint component.

45. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 35 wherein the convex lower articulation surface is not in direct contact with the inner surface of the lower joint component.

46. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 44 wherein the washer comprises a polymer.

47. A spinal prosthesis system comprising:

a pair of bilateral prosthetic devices adapted for side by side placement within an intervertebral disc space between upper and lower vertebrae, wherein each of the pair of bilateral prosthetic devices includes

an upper joint component comprising a concave upper articulation surface;

a lower joint component comprising a convex lower articulation surface and configured to movably engage the concave upper articulation surface to form an articulating joint;

a connection arm extending from either the upper or lower joint component;

a rod extending between a pair of bone fixation devices;

wherein the connection arm movably engages the rod.

48. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 47 wherein the rod comprises PEEK.

49. The spinal prosthesis system of claim 47 wherein the rod comprises a metal.
