Abstract

A system and method for processing a received media item recommendation message is disclosed. A recipient receives the media item recommendation message which includes a media item identifier of a media item and presence information of a recommender of the media item in association with the media item identifier. The presence information may be in the form of metadata. The recipient may render the presence information and/or store or download the presence information to a media item playlist, to another device, or to a storage medium for subsequent rendering. The media item recommendation message also may include a media item annotation. The media item annotation may also be in the form of metadata and may be rendered and/or stored or downloaded to a media item playlist, to another device, or to a storage medium for subsequent rendering.

Claims

1. A method of processing a received media item recommendation, comprising the steps of:

receiving a media item recommendation message of a recommender comprising a media item identifier of a media item and presence information of the recommender in association with the media item identifier; and

rendering the presence information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the presence information comprises at least one component comprised from a group consisting of:

an audio component, an image component, and a text component.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the presence information comprises an audio component, and wherein the step of rendering the presence information further comprises playing the audio component of the presence information.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the rendering the presence information comprises the playing the audio component in a manner selected from a group consisting of:

prior to playing the media item, during the playing of a currently playing media item, and instead of playing the currently playing media item.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the audio component comprises an announcement track comprising one or more characteristics, and further comprising the steps of:

comparing the announcement track with a currently playing media item; and

playing the announcement track with the one or more characteristics that most closely match the one or more characteristics of the currently playing media item.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein one of the one or more characteristics comprises a tempo of the announcement track.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising the step of beat-matching to the currently playing media item the announcement track with the tempo that most closely matches the tempo of the currently playing media item.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of storing the presence information to a media item playlist.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transferring the presence information to a storage medium.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of transferring the presence information to a portable device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the media item recommendation message further comprises a media item annotation.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of rendering the media item annotation.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of storing the media item annotation to a media item playlist.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of transferring the media item annotation to a storage medium.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of transferring the media item annotation to a portable device.

16. A system for processing a media item recommendation in a media item recommendation system, comprising:

a control system, wherein the control system is adapted to;

receive a media item recommendation message of a recommender comprising a media item identifier of a media item and presence information of the recommender in association with the media item identifier; and

render the presence information.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the presence information is at least one component comprised from a group consisting of:

an audio component, an image component, and a text component.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the presence information comprises an audio component, and wherein the control system is adapted to render the presence information by playing the audio component.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the control system is adapted to render the presence information by the playing the audio component in a manner selected from a group consisting of:

prior to playing the media item, during the playing of a currently playing media item, and instead of playing the currently playing media item.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the audio component comprises an announcement track comprising one or more characteristics, and wherein the control system is further adapted to:

compare the announcement track with a currently playing media item; and

play the announcement track with the one or more characteristics that most closely matches the one or more characteristics of the currently playing media item.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein one of the one or more characteristics comprises a tempo of the announcement track.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the control system is further adapted to beat-match to the currently playing media item the announcement track with the tempo that most closely matches the tempo of the currently playing media item.

23. The system of claim 16, wherein the control system is further adapted to store the presence information to a media item playlist.

24. The system of claim 16, wherein the control system is further adapted to transfer the presence information to a storage medium.

25. The system of claim 16, wherein the control system is further adapted to transfer the presence information to a separate portable device.

26. The system of claim 16, wherein the media item recommendation message further comprises a media item annotation.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the control system is further adapted to render the media item annotation.

28. The system of claim 26, wherein the control system is further adapted to store the media item annotation to a media item playlist.

29. The system of claim 26, wherein the control system is further adapted to transfer the media item annotation to a storage medium.

30. The system of claim 26, wherein the control system is further adapted to transfer the media item annotation to a separate portable device.

31. A computer-readable medium, comprising instructions for instructing a computer to:

receive a media item recommendation message of a recommender comprising a media item identifier of a media item and presence information of the recommender in association with the media item identifier; and

render the presence information.

32. The computer-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the presence information is at least one component comprised from a group consisting of:

an audio component, an image component, and a text component.

33. The computer-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the presence information comprises an audio component, and comprising instructions for instructing a computer to render the presence information by playing the audio component.

34. The computer-readable medium of claim 33, comprising instructions for instructing a computer to render the presence information by the playing the audio component in a manner selected from a group consisting of:

prior to playing the media item, during the playing of a currently playing media item, and instead of playing the currently playing media item.

35. The computer-readable medium of claim 33, wherein the audio component comprises an announcement track comprising one or more characteristics, and comprising instructions for instructing a computer to render the presence information by:

comparing the announcement track with a currently playing media item; and

playing the announcement track with the one or more characteristics that most closely matches the one or more characteristics of the currently playing media item.

36. The computer-readable medium of claim 35, wherein one of the one or more characteristics comprises a tempo of the announcement track.

37. The computer-readable medium of claim 36, comprising instructions for instructing a computer to render the presence information by beat-matching to the currently playing media item the announcement track with the tempo that most closely matches the tempo of the currently playing media item.

38. The computer-readable medium of claim 31, further comprising instructions for instructing a computer to store the presence information to a media item playlist.

39. The computer-readable medium of claim 31, further comprising instructions for instructing a computer to transfer the presence information to a storage medium.

40. The computer-readable medium of claim 31, further comprising instructions for instructing a computer to transfer the presence information to a separate portable device.

41. The computer-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the media item recommendation message further comprises a media item annotation.

42. The computer-readable medium of claim 41, further comprising instructions for instructing a computer to render the media item annotation.

43. The computer-readable medium of claim 41, further comprising instructions for instructing a computer to store the media item annotation to a media item playlist.

44. The computer-readable medium of claim 41, further comprising instructions for instructing a computer to transfer the media item annotation to a storage medium.

45. The computer-readable medium of claim 41, further comprising instructions for instructing a computer to transfer the media item annotation to a portable device.

46. A user interface generated by an application executing on a processor, comprising:

a presence information preference setting screen, comprising;

an insert presence information section, wherein the insert presence information section comprises a selector used to direct when to include presence information in a media item recommendation message.

47. The user interface of claim 46, wherein the presence information preference setting screen further comprises a render presence information section, wherein the render presence information section comprises a selector used to direct when the presence information is rendered.

48. The user interface of claim 46, wherein the presence information preference setting screen further comprises a presence information setting section, wherein the presence information setting section comprises a selector for setting a component of the presence information.

49. A user interface generated by an application executing on a processor, comprising:

an annotation information setting screen, comprising,

a render annotation information selector, wherein the render annotation information selector is used to direct when annotation information is to be rendered.

50. The user interface of claim 49, wherein the annotation information setting screen further comprises a presence information selector, wherein the presence information selector is used to include presence information in a media item recommendation message when no media item annotation is included in the media item recommendation message.

51. The user interface of claim 49, wherein the annotation information setting screen further comprises an annotation setting section, wherein the annotation setting section comprises a selector for setting a component of the annotation information.
