Abstract

A method and apparatus for using a microcontainer as a Plain-Old-Java-Object (POJO) based kernel in an application server. In one embodiment, the method includes dynamically construct deployed objects of a deployment from aspects. The method further includes providing a runtime infrastructure by dynamically constructing kernel objects of an application server from the aspects to execute the deployed objects.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

dynamically constructing deployed objects of a deployment from aspects; and

providing a runtime infrastructure by dynamically constructing kernel objects of an application server from the aspects to perform operations on the deployed objects.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to a change to the aspects used by the deployed objects, identifying the deployed objects affected by the change and determining actions for affected deployed objects while maintaining dependencies among the deployed objects.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to a change to the aspects, determining whether to restart a service associated with the deployed objects.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to a change to the aspects, determining whether to reinject one of the kernel objects that provides resource for the deployed objects.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the deployed objects includes Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs).

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the kernel objects includes interceptors implemented by POJOs.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

managing the runtime operations of the deployed objects with a state machine.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the aspects include customized plug-ins to be integrated into the kernel objects at runtime.

9. A system comprising:

a microcontainer to provide a runtime infrastructure for an application server, the microcontainer having kernel objects to execute deployed objects at runtime; and

a repository, coupled to the microcontainer, to store a collection of aspects to construct the deployed objects and the kernel objects at runtime.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the kernel objects and the deployed objects include Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs).

11. The system of claim 9 wherein the collection of aspects includes customized plug-ins to be integrated into the kernel objects and the deployed objects at runtime.

12. The system of claim 9 wherein the microcontainer further comprises:

a state-machine controller to manage dependencies of the deployed objects.

13. The system of claim 9 wherein the microcontainer further comprises:

a chain of interceptors to execute the deployed objects, the chain of interceptors to be assembled at runtime.

14. The system of claim 9 wherein the microcontainer further comprises:

a controller, based on an Inversion of Control (10C) design, to control injection of an interceptor for execution of the deployed objects.

15. An article of manufacture, comprising:

a machine-accessible storage medium including data that, when accessed by a machine, cause the machine to perform a method comprising;

dynamically constructing deployed objects of a deployment from aspects; and

providing a runtime infrastructure by dynamically constructing kernel objects of an application server from the aspects to perform operations on the deployed objects.

16. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the aspects includes customized plug-ins to be integrated into the kernel objects and the deployed objects at runtime.

17. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the method further comprises:

in response to a change to the aspects used by the deployed objects, identifying the deployed objects affected by the change and determining actions for affected deployed objects while maintaining dependencies among the deployed objects.

18. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the aspects include Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs).

19. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the kernel objects and the deployed objects include POJOs.

20. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the method further comprises:

providing the runtime infrastructure in a server environment that supports POJOs.
