Abstract

Improved systems and methods to navigate, browse, search and/or playback digital media assets (e.g., media items) hosted on a media server are disclosed. One embodiment pertains to a user interface arrangement, such as a hierarchical menu system, that facilitates navigation, browsing and playing of media items remotely stored on a media server. The user interface arrangement can present and permit navigation of categorized media items. The user interface arrangement can also present and permit navigation of media items related to another media item (such as a media item that has been selected and played). Another embodiment relates to progressive searching of remote media items from a search user interface. The search user interface can, but need not, be part of the user interface arrangement. The user interface arrangement and/or the search user interface can be presented on a display device associated with a client device. In one embodiment, the display device can be a television and the client device can be an electronic apparatus that can couple to the media server via a network.

Claims

1. A method for locating and playing a media item from a media server that hosts a plurality of media items, said method comprising:

(a) displaying a plurality of categories;

(b) receiving a selection of one of the categories;

(c) requesting, from the media server, information pertaining to a set of media items that match the selected category;

(d) receiving, from the media server, the requested information pertaining to the set of media items;

(e) displaying a first portion of the requested information for at least a plurality of the media items in the set of media items;

(f) receiving a user designation of one of the media items within the plurality of media items; and

(g) displaying, concurrently with said displaying (e), a second portion of the requested information for the designated one of the media items within the plurality of media items, the second portion including at least one piece of information pertaining to the designated one of the media items beyond the first portion.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said displaying (g) and said displaying (e) are presented on a common display screen.

3. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said method is performed by an electronic apparatus coupled to a television, and wherein said displaying (a), (e) and (g) are displayed on the television.

4. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein said method further comprises:

(h) receiving a user selection of one of the media items within the set of media items;

(i) requesting, from the media server, media content pertaining to the selected one of the media items;

(j) receiving, from the media server, the requested media content pertaining to the selected one of the media items; and

(k) playing the received media content.

5. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein said receiving (j) is provided by the media server streaming the media content to the electronic apparatus.

6. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein said method is performed by an electronic apparatus, and

wherein said method further comprises:

(l) storing, at the electronic apparatus, an indication of the received media content being played.

7. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the electronic apparatus supports a plurality of distinct users, and

wherein said storing (l) stores the indication of the received media content being played in association with a particular one of the users.

8. A method as recited in claim 7, wherein said method further comprises:

(m) subsequently retrieving and displaying information based on the at least one indication of received media content.

9. A method as recited in claim 8, wherein said storing (l) stores the indication of the received media content in association with the particular one of the users only when a particular one of the users is logged-in to the media server.

10. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein said method further comprises:

(l) requesting, from the media server, information pertaining to one or more media items that are related to the selected one of the media items;

(m) receiving, from the media server, the requested information pertaining to the one or more media items that are related to the selected one of the media items; and

(n) displaying at least a first portion of the requested information for each of the one or more media items that are related to the selected one of the media items.

11. A method as recited in claim 10, wherein said displaying (n) further displays a resume indicator that is selectable to cause the playback of the selected one of the media items to resume.

12. A method as recited in claim 10, wherein said displaying (n) further displays a return indicator that is selectable to cause said method to return to said displaying (a).

13. A method as recited in claim 1,

wherein the set of media items requested in said requesting (c) is a first set of media items that match the selected category, and

wherein said method further comprises:

(h) requesting, from the media server, information pertaining to a second set of media items that match the selected category;

(i) receiving, from the media server, the requested information pertaining to the second set of media items; and

(j) combining the requested information pertaining to the second set of media items with the requested information pertaining to the first set of media items that was previously received.

14. A method as recited in claim 13, wherein said combining (j) forms a list that is scrollable on being displayed by said displaying (e), whereby a first portion of the requested information for a plurality of the media items in the first set or the second set of media items is displayed.

15. A video review display screen, comprising:

a video list area that displays a list of video items that are able to be selected, each of the video items being displayed including at least an associated image and a first set of attributes for the corresponding video item; and

a video detail area that, for the selected one of the video items, displays (i) the associated image in a larger format than used in the video list area, and (ii) a second set of attributes pertaining to the selected one of the video items.

16. A video review display screen as recited in claim 15, wherein said video review display screen is part of a hierarchical display screen arrangement,

wherein said hierarchical display screen arrangement further comprises:

a video playback screen that presents a selected video item from said video list area, and

wherein the video playback screen is displayed when one of the video items is selected from the video review screen to be played.

17. A video review display screen as recited in claim 16, wherein said hierarchical menu system further comprises:

a related video screen that presents a list of video items that are related to the selected video item.

18. A video review display screen as recited in claim 16, wherein said hierarchical menu system further comprises:

a history screen that presents a list of video items that were previously played.

19. A video review display screen as recited in claim 15, wherein the second set of attributes includes one or more of the attributes of the first set of attributes.

20. A video review display screen as recited in claim 15, wherein the second set of attributes includes a plurality of attributes not within the one or more of the attributes of the first set of attributes.

21. A video review display screen as recited in claim 15, wherein said video review screen is displayed on a display device coupled to an electronic apparatus.

22. A video review display screen as recited in claim 15, wherein the display device is a television, and wherein the electronic apparatus is a set-top box.

23. A hierarchical menu system for an electronic apparatus coupled to a television, said menu system comprising:

a video access category screen that presents a menu of video access categories;

a search screen that presents a search entry region and a character selection region, wherein one or more characters selected from the character selection region for a search string used in the search entry region to search for matching video items; and

a video review screen that presents a list of video items that pertain to a selected one of the video access categories or match a search string provided in the search entry region.

24. A hierarchical menu system as recited in claim 23, wherein one of the video items in the list of video items can be selected to be played by the electronic apparatus.

25. A hierarchical menu system as recited in claim 24, wherein video content for the video items are remotely stored and accessed through a media server.

26. A hierarchical menu system as recited in claim 25, wherein the electronic apparatus is coupled to a television, and

wherein when one of the video items is selected from the video review screen to be played, the video content for the selected one of the video items is streamed from the media server to the electronic apparatus and presented on the television coupled to the electronic apparatus.

27. A hierarchical menu system as recited in claim 23, wherein the video access categories include one or more of a most viewed category, a most recent category, a top rated category, or a favorites category.

28. A hierarchical menu system as recited in claim 23,

wherein said hierarchical menu system further comprises:

a video playback screen that presents the selected video item, and

wherein the video playback screen is displayed when one of the video items is selected from the video review screen to be played.

29. A hierarchical menu system as recited in claim 28, wherein said hierarchical menu system further comprises:

a related video screen that presents a list of video items that are related to the selected video item.

30. A hierarchical menu system as recited in claim 28, wherein said hierarchical menu system further comprises:

a history screen that presents a list of video items that were previously played.

31. An electronic apparatus for presenting and playing media information available from a remote media server, said electronic apparatus comprising:

a display device;

a remote controller enabling a user to interact with said electronic apparatus;

a memory device for storing data and computer program instructions, the computer program instructions include at least;

computer program instructions for displaying, on said display device, a plurality of categories;

computer program instructions for receiving a selection of one of the categories;

computer program instructions for requesting, from the media server, information pertaining to a set of media items that match the selected category;

computer program instructions for receiving, from the media server, the requested information pertaining to the set of media items;

computer program instructions for displaying a first portion of the requested information for at least a plurality of the media items in the set of media items;

computer program instructions for receiving a user designation of one of the media items within the plurality of media items; and

computer program instructions for displaying a second portion of the requested information for the designated one of the media items within the plurality of media items, the second portion including at least one piece of information pertaining to the designated one of the media items beyond the first portion; and

a processor operatively connected to receive input signals from said remote controller and to output signals to said display device, said processor further operatively connected to said memory device and configured to execute computer program instructions stored in said memory device.

32. An electronic apparatus as recited in claim 31, wherein when the second portion of the requested information is being displayed, the first portion of the requested information is concurrently displayed.
