Abstract

According to an example embodiment a display screen includes a first sensor array that is operable to detect a first external stimulus that meets a first detection criteria, and a second sensor array that is operable to detect a second external stimulus that meets a second detection criteria, the second detection criteria quantitatively different from the first detection criteria.

Claims

1. A display screen, comprising:

a first sensor array that is operable to detect a first external stimulus that meets a first detection criteria; and

a second sensor array that is operable to detect a second external stimulus that meets a second detection criteria, the second detection criteria quantitatively different from the first detection criteria.

2. The display screen of claim 1, wherein the first and second sensor arrays belong to a common type, the common type selected from the group consisting of touch-sensitive arrays, proximity-sensitive arrays, and light-sensitive arrays.

3. The display screen of claim 2, the first sensor array comprising a capacitive touchscreen array, the second sensor array comprising a resistive touchscreen array.

4. The display screen of claim 3, the first detection criteria comprising a first pressure that is applied against the display screen, the second detection criteria comprising a second pressure that is applied against the display screen, the second pressure greater than the first pressure.

5. The display screen of claim 1, the first and second sensor arrays belonging to different types, the different types selected from the group consisting of touch-sensitive arrays, proximity-sensitive arrays, and light-sensitive arrays.

6. The display screen of claim 5, wherein the first sensor array comprises a proximity-sensitive array.

7. The display screen of claim 6, wherein the second sensor array comprises a touch-sensitive array.

8. A method, comprising the steps of:

detecting a first stimulus in a region of a display screen using a first sensor array of the display screen; and

detecting a second stimulus in the region of the display screen using a second sensor array of the display screen.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein detecting the first stimulus comprises detecting a first pressure against the first sensor array, and wherein detecting the second stimulus comprises detecting a second pressure against the second sensor array, the second pressure greater than the first pressure.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein detecting the first pressure comprises detecting the first pressure with a capacitive touchscreen array.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein detecting the second pressure comprises detecting the second pressure with a resistive touchscreen array.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

applying a first haptic feedback to the display screen in response to detecting the first pressure; and

applying a second haptic feedback to the display screen in response to detecting the second pressure.

13. The method of claim 12, the first haptic feedback different from the second haptic feedback.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein detecting the first stimulus using the first sensor array comprises detecting the first stimulus using one selected from the group consisting of a proximity-sensitive sensor array and a light-sensitive sensor array, and wherein detecting the second stimulus using the second sensor array comprises detecting the second stimulus using a touch-sensitive sensor array.

15. A display system, comprising:

a processor;

a display screen coupled to the processor, the display screen substantially planar;

a first sensor network coupled to the processor, the first sensor network operable to detect an object that impinges a first plane that is substantially parallel to the display screen; and

a second sensor network coupled to the processor, the second sensor network operable to detect an object the impinges a second plane that is substantially parallel to the display screen.

16. The display system of claim 15, the first sensor network operable to detect an object that applies a first threshold force against a surface of the display screen, the second sensor network operable to detect an object that applies a second threshold force against the surface of the display screen, the second threshold force greater than the first threshold force.

17. The display system of claim 16, the first sensor network comprising a capacitive touchscreen array, the second sensor network comprising a resistive touchscreen array.

18. The display system of claim 15, the first sensor network comprising a sensor array that is operable to detect an object that is close to, but not touching, the display screen.

19. The display system of claim 18, the second sensor network comprising a sensor array that is selected from the group consisting of a touch-sensitive array and a light-sensitive array.

20. The display system of claim 15, further comprising a tactile feedback mechanism coupled to the display screen, the tactile feedback mechanism operable to transmit a first tactile feedback sensation to the display screen when the first plane is impinged, the tactile feedback mechanism further operable to transmit a second tactile feedback sensation to the display screen when the second plane is impinged.
