Abstract

System, method and program product for backing up a plurality of data files from a first server to a second server via a network. A determination is made that more than one compressed data file at the second server, downloaded by the first server, is waiting to be decompressed. A determination is made whether an amount of available processor resource in the second server exceeds a predetermined threshold. If the amount of available processor resource in the second server exceeds the predetermined threshold, a plurality of data decompression programs are invoked in the second server to decompress the plurality of compressed data files substantially concurrently, and data updates in the decompressed data files are applied to corresponding files in the second server.

Claims

1. A method for backing up a plurality of data files from a first server to a second server via a network, said method comprising the steps of:

determining that more than one compressed data file at said second server, downloaded by said first server, is waiting to be decompressed;

determining if an amount of available processor resource in said second server exceeds a predetermined threshold, and

if the amount of available processor resource in said second server exceeds the predetermined threshold, invoking a plurality of data decompression programs in said second server to decompress said plurality of compressed data files substantially concurrently, and applying data updates in the decompressed data files to corresponding files in said second server.

2. A computer program product for backing up a plurality of data files from a first server to a second server via a network, said computer program product comprising:

a computer readable media;

first program instructions to determine that more than one compressed data file at said second server, downloaded by said first server, is waiting to be decompressed;

second program instructions to determine if an amount of available processor resource in said second server exceeds a predetermined threshold, and

third program instructions, responsive to the amount of available processor resource in said second server exceeding the predetermined threshold, to invoke a plurality of data decompression programs in said second server to decompress said plurality of compressed data files substantially concurrently, and apply data updates in the decompressed data files to corresponding files in said second server; and

wherein

said first, second and third program instructions are stored on said media in functional form.

3. A method for backing up a plurality of data files from a first server to a second server via a network, said method comprising the steps of:

determining that more than one data file at said first server is waiting to be compressed;

determining if an amount of available processor resource at said first server exceeds a first predetermined threshold and if an amount of available bandwidth of said network exceeds a second predetermined threshold, and

if the amount of available processor resource at said first server exceeds the first predetermined threshold and the amount of available bandwidth of said network exceeds a second predetermined threshold, invoking a plurality of data compression programs at said first server to compress said plurality of data files substantially concurrently, and downloading the plurality of data files after compression from said first server to said second server.

4. A method as set forth in claim 3 further comprising the steps of:

determining that more than one data file at said second server, downloaded by said first server, is waiting to be decompressed;

determining if an amount of available processor resource at said second server exceeds a predetermined threshold, and

if the amount of available processor resource at said second server exceeds the predetermined threshold, invoking a plurality of data decompression programs at said second server to decompress said plurality of data files substantially concurrently, and applying data updates in the decompressed data files to corresponding files in said second server.
