Abstract

This invention discloses pre-formed electrochromic films that are used in assembly of electrochromic devices. These films are laminated to conductive substrates to form the electrochromic devices. The invention also discloses optical characteristics of the substrates for imparting durability to the electrochromic devices from solar radiation

Claims

1. An electrochromic device formed by assembling a pair of conductive substrates and a pre-formed multilayer solid film wherein the said film comprising an electrolyte layer and an electrochromic layer.

2. An electrochromic device formed as in claim 1 where the multilayer polymer film comprises an anodic layer, a cathodic layer and an electrolyte layer.

3. An electrochromic device formed as in claim 1, where the pre-formed multilayer film is formed by co-extrusion.

4. An electrochromic device formed as in claim 1, where the multilayer film comprises thermoplastic and thermoset layers.

5. An electrochromic device formed as in claim 1 wherein, at least one of the layers in the multilayer film is further polymerized after assembling with the said substrates.

6. An electrochromic device formed as in claim 1 where the lamination process to assemble the substrate and the multilayer film is carried out under heat and pressure.

7. An electrochromic device formed by assembling a pair of conductive substrates and a pre-formed polymeric film comprising of at least one electrochromic material.

8. An electrochromic device as in claim 7, wherein the electrochromic material comprises of a cathodic material.

9. An electrochromic device as in claim 7, wherein the electrochromic material comprises of an anodic material.

An electrochromic device as in claim 7 wherein the conductive substrates are formed by depositing conductive coatings on polymeric films and further the coated substrates have a surface resistivity of is less than 30 ohms/square and visible transmission of the said coated substrates is greater than 60%.

11. An electrochromic device formed by laminating between a pair of conductive substrates at least two pre-formed solid films, wherein one of the said films is a discrete electrolyte film and one a discrete electrochromic film.

12. A window exposed to solar radiation, wherein the window has at least one electrochromic component, and the window configured to attenuate blue and violet radiation from solar radiation before the solar radiation reaches the electrochromic component.

13. A window exposed to solar radiation as in claim 12, where the substrate forming the electrochromic component attenuates the said solar radiation.
