Abstract

A surgical device is disclosed which includes a handle assembly, an elongated member and a disposable loading unit. The handle assembly includes a mode selection mechanism configured to alternate the surgical device between a first grasping mode of operation and a second clamping mode of operation. The handle assembly includes a rotation control member and an articulation lever. The rotation control member is configured to facilitate rotation of the elongated member with respect to the handle assembly. The articulation lever is configured to facilitate articulation of the tool assembly about an axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of elongated member. In one embodiment, the tool assembly includes a cartridge assembly having a plurality of staples and an anvil assembly configured to clamp and staple tissue in the second clamping mode of operation of the device.

Claims

1. A surgical device comprising:

a handle assembly including an actuation shaft, a stationary handle, and a movable handle, the movable handle being operably associated with the actuation shaft such that movement of the movable handle effects axial movement of the actuation shaft, the handle assembly having a mode selection mechanism configured to alternate the surgical device between a first mode of operation and a second mode of operation;

an elongated member extending distally from the handle assembly, the elongated member defining a longitudinal axis extending the length of the elongated member;

a tool assembly mounted to a distal end of the elongated member, the tool assembly having a cartridge assembly having a plurality of staples supported therein and an anvil assembly, at least one of the anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly being movable in relation to each other between open and closed positions; and

the mode selection mechanism including a switch for selecting between the first mode of operation, in which the cartridge assembly and anvil assembly are moveable back and forth between the open and closed positions, and the second mode of operation, in which the cartridge assembly and anvil assembly clamp tissue, a disconnect member, a latch pawl, and a pawl arm movable between a first position engaged with the actuation shaft and a second position disengaged from the actuation shaft, the latch pawl operably associated with a vertical pawl in the first mode of operation, the vertical pawl being movable from a first position engaged with the actuation shaft to prevent axial movement of the actuation shaft and second position disengaged from the actuation shaft to permit axial movement of the actuation shaft, the switch and disconnect member being operably associated with the vertical pawl in the second mode of operation, the switch configured to move the vertical pawl to its second position upon movement of the movable handle when the pawl arm is in its first position, the disconnect member configured to move the vertical pawl from its second position to its first position upon movement of the movable handle when the pawl arm is in its second position.

The surgical device according to claim 1, wherein movement of the movable handle when the pawl arm is in its first position effects movement of the tool assembly between the open and closed positions, and wherein movement of the movable handle away from the stationary handle when the pawl arm is in its second position maintains the tool assembly in the closed position and at least one subsequent movement of the movable handle toward the stationary handle when the pawl arm is in its second position fires staples from the tool assembly.

3. A surgical device according to claim 1, wherein the pawl arm is operably associated with at least one slide button slidably supported on the movable handle and configured to move the pawl arm between its first and second positions.

The surgical device of claim 3, wherein the mode selection mechanism includes a pivotable yoke, the pivotable yoke being disposed in the handle assembly and having a first arm for engaging the movable handle and a second arm for engaging the slide button to maintain the pawl arm in the first position as the movable handle moves away from the stationary handle.

5. A surgical device according to claim 1, wherein the handle portion includes a rotation control member configured to facilitate rotation of the elongated member with respect to the handle portion.

6. A surgical device according to claim 1, wherein the tool assembly is configured to grasp tissue when the pawl arm is in its first position and clamp tissue when the pawl arm is in its second position.

7. A surgical device according to claim 1, wherein the mode selection mechanism is configured to retain the surgical device in a default mode.

8. A surgical device according to claim 1, wherein the handle portion includes an articulation actuator configured to facilitate articulation of the tool assembly.

9. A surgical device according to claim 1, wherein the elongated member is rotatable in relation to the handle portion.

10. A surgical device according to claim 1, wherein the first position of the pawl arm is associated with a first mode of operation of the device and the second position of the pawl arm is associated with a second mode of operation of the device.

11. A surgical device according to claim 10, wherein the first mode of operation is an initial mode of operation.

The surgical device of claim 1, wherein when the pawl arm is in its second position, an actuation shaft advancement mechanism advances the actuation shaft in a distal direction upon movement of the movable handle to move the tool assembly to the closed position, and wherein upon subsequent movement of the movable handle the actuation shaft advancement mechanism engages the actuating shaft to fire staples from the tool assembly.

13. The surgical device of claim 12, wherein the actuation shaft has teeth and the actuation shaft advancement mechanism is a pawl that engages and disengages the teeth in an alternating fashion.

14. The surgical device of claim 13, wherein the pawl is attached to the movable handle and engages the teeth as the movable handle is moved towards the stationary handle.

15. The surgical device of claim 1, wherein the pawl arm includes a grasping pawl that engages a first slot defined in the actuation shaft when the pawl arm is in the first position.

16. The surgical device of claim 15, wherein the actuation shaft has a second slot disposed proximally of the first slot, the grasping pawl being disposed in the second slot when the pawl arm is in its second position.

17. A surgical device comprising:

a handle assembly including a housing defining a stationary handle, a shaft, and a movable handle, the movable handle being operably associated with the shaft such that movement of the movable handle effects axial movement of the shaft;

a tool assembly mounted to a distal end of an elongated member extending distally from the handle assembly, the tool assembly including a cartridge assembly having a plurality of staples supported therein and an anvil assembly, at least one of the anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly being movable in relation to each other between open and closed positions; and

a mode selection mechanism supported within the housing, the mode selection mechanism including a switch, a disconnect member, and a pawl arm operably associated with at least one slide button slidably supported on the movable handle, the at least one slide button being movable between a first upward position and a second downward position, the first upward position being associated with a first mode of operation of the device and the second downward position being associated with a second mode of operation of the device, the shaft being engaged by the pawl arm in the first mode of operation and disengaged by the pawl arm in the second mode of operation, the switch and disconnect member being operably associated with a vertical paw, the vertical pawl being movable from a first position engaged with the shaft to prevent axial movement of the shaft and second position disengaged from the shaft to permit axial movement of the shaft,

the switch configured to move the vertical pawl to its second position upon movement of the movable handle during the first mode of operation, the disconnect member configured to move the vertical pawl from its second position to its first position upon movement of the movable handle during the second mode of operation, wherein movement of the movable handle during the first mode of operation effects movement of tool assembly between the open and closed positions, and wherein movement of the movable handle away from the stationary handle during the second mode of operation maintains the tool assembly in the closed position and at least one subsequent movement of the movable handle toward the stationary handle during the second mode of operation fires staples from the tool assembly.

18. A surgical device comprising:

a handle assembly including a housing defining a stationary handle, a shaft, and a movable handle, the movable handle being operably associated with the shaft such that movement of the movable handle effects axial movement of the shaft;

a tool assembly mounted to a distal end of an elongated member extending distally from the handle assembly, the tool assembly including a cartridge assembly having a plurality of staples supported therein and an anvil assembly, at least one of the anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly being movable in relation to each other between open and closed positions; and

a mode selection mechanism supported within the housing, the mode selection mechanism including a switch, a disconnect member, and a pawl arm operably associated with at least one slide button slidably supported on the movable handle, the at least one slide button being movable between a first upward position and a second downward position, the first upward position being associated with a first mode of operation of the device and the second downward position being associated with a second mode of operation of the device, the shaft being engaged by the pawl arm in the first mode of operation and disengaged by the pawl arm in the second mode of operation, the switch and disconnect member being operably associated with a vertical paw, the vertical pawl being movable from a first position engaged with the shaft to prevent axial movement of the shaft and second position disengaged from the shaft to permit axial movement of the shaft,

the switch configured to move the vertical pawl to its second position upon movement of the movable handle during the first mode of operation, the disconnect member configured to move the vertical pawl from its second position to its first position upon movement of the movable handle during the second mode of operation, wherein movement of the movable handle during the first mode of operation effects movement of the tool assembly between the open and closed positions, and wherein when the pawl arm is in its second position, movement of the movable handle away from the stationary handle maintains the tool assembly in the closed position and subsequent movement of the movable handle toward the stationary handle causes a shaft advancement mechanism to advance the shaft distally to fire staples from the tool assembly.
