End effector closure system for a surgical stapling instrument
First Claim
1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
- a firing drive configured to generate a firing motion;
an end effector, comprising;
a channel configured to receive a staple cartridge;
an anvil movably coupled to said channel; and
a cutting member operably supported within said channel, wherein said cutting member is operably engaged with said firing drive and is responsive to said firing motion; and
a closure drive configured to generate a closing motion, wherein said anvil is operably engaged with said closure drive and is movably responsive to said closing motion, and wherein said closure drive includes;
a trigger, wherein said anvil is movable between an open position and a partially closed position when said trigger is moved between a first position and a second position, and wherein said anvil is movable between said partially closed position and a closed position when said trigger is moved between said second position and a third position; and
a lock member configured to selectively engage said closure drive and lock said anvil in at least one of said partially closed position and said closed position.

Abstract
A surgical instrument including a closure system configured to move an anvil of an end effector between an open position, a partially closed position, and a closed position. The surgical instrument can further include a lock member configured to selectively engage and lock the closure system when the anvil is positioned in at least one of its partially closed and closed positions. In at least one embodiment, the surgical instrument can include a trigger configured to pivot the anvil, the lock member can include a follower portion, and the closure drive can include a lock spring configured to bias the follower portion against a cam surface of the trigger such that the follower portion can engage a notch in the cam surface when the anvil is pivoted into its partially closed position, or closed position, and prevent the anvil from being pivoted into its open position.
