Abstract

A method, apparatus, and computer program product for safety device management is provided. The method includes performing an action with respect to the safety device in accordance with a rule when a corresponding condition of the rule is met. The actions subject to the rule include at least one of: device inspection, device testing, device activation, device de-activation, device reset, and notification generation.

Claims

1. A method for managing a safety device, comprising:

performing an action with respect to the safety device in accordance with a rule when a corresponding condition of the rule is met;

wherein actions subject to the rule include at least one of;

device inspection;

device testing;

device activation;

device de-activation;

device reset; and

notification generation.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

creating a record for the safety device and the rule; and

storing results of the performing an action in the record.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the record includes fields for a device identifier, device location, and status flag indicator;

and

wherein further, the device inspection includes presence detection of the safety device with respect to an assigned location, the method further comprising;

receiving a signal when the safety device is removed from the assigned location specified in the device location field, the signal indicating at least one of device in service and device misplacement; and

setting the status flag indicator in response to receiving the signal.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the notification generation includes creating an alert in response to the setting of the status flag indicator and in accordance with the rule.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the record includes fields for a component identifier of the safety device and component values;

and

wherein further, the device inspection includes device component inspection, the method further comprising;

receiving a signal specifying at least one of an expiration date of a device component and a consumption value of the device component; and

storing the at least one of an expiration date and consumption value in the component value fields in the record.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the record includes fields for a device reset indicator, a device de-activation indicator, and logical components;

and

wherein further, the device testing includes;

initiating internal testing of at least one logical component of the safety device;

recording results of the internal testing in a respective logical component field; and

setting one of the device reset indicator and device de-activation indicator in the record based upon the results of the internal testing.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the notification generation includes creating an alert in response to the setting of the one of the device reset indicator and device de-activation indicator and in accordance with the rule.

8. A self-managing apparatus, comprising:

a safety device; and

a device manager application executing on the safety device, the device manager application performing an action with respect to the safety device in accordance with a rule when a corresponding condition of the rule is met;

wherein actions subject to the rule include at least one of;

device inspection;

device testing;

device activation;

device de-activation;

device reset; and

notification generation.

9. The self-managing apparatus of claim 8, wherein the device manager further performs:

creating a record for the safety device and the rule; and

storing results of the performing an action in the record.

10. The self-managing apparatus of claim 9, wherein the record includes fields for a device identifier, device location, and status flag indicator;

and

wherein further, the device inspection includes presence detection of the safety device with respect to an assigned location, the device manager application further performing;

receiving a signal when the safety device is removed from the assigned location specified in the device location field, the signal indicating at least one of device in service and device misplacement; and

setting the status flag indicator in response to receiving the signal.

11. The self-managing apparatus of claim 10, wherein the notification generation includes creating an alert in response to the setting of the status flag indicator and in accordance with the rule.

12. The self-managing apparatus of claim 9, wherein the record includes fields for a component identifier of the safety device and component values;

and

wherein further, the device inspection includes device component inspection, the device manager application further performing;

receiving a signal specifying at least one of an expiration date of a device component and a consumption value of the device component; and

storing the at least one of an expiration date and consumption value in the component value fields in the record.

13. The self-managing apparatus of claim 9, wherein the record includes fields for a device reset indicator, a device de-activation indicator, and logical components;

and

wherein further, the device testing includes;

initiating internal testing of at least one logical component of the safety device;

recording results of the internal testing in a respective logical component field; and

setting one of the device reset indicator and device de-activation indicator in the record based upon the results of the internal testing.

14. The self-managing apparatus of claim 13, wherein the notification generation includes creating an alert in response to the setting of the one of the device reset indicator and device de-activation indicator and in accordance with the rule.

15. A computer program product managing a safety device, the computer program product including instructions for implementing a method, the method comprising:

performing an action with respect to the safety device in accordance with a rule when a corresponding condition of the rule is met;

wherein actions subject to the rule include at least one of;

device inspection;

device testing;

device activation;

device de-activation;

device reset; and

notification generation.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, further comprising instructions for performing:

creating a record for the safety device and the rule; and

storing results of the performing an action in the record.

17. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein the record includes fields for a device identifier, device location, and status flag indicator;

and

wherein further, the device inspection includes presence detection of the safety device with respect to an assigned location, the method further comprising;

receiving a signal when the safety device is removed from the assigned location specified in the device location field, the signal indicating at least one of device in service and device misplacement; and

setting the status flag indicator in response to receiving the signal.

18. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the notification generation includes creating an alert in response to the setting of the status flag indicator and in accordance with the rule.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the record includes fields for a component identifier of the safety device and component values;

and

wherein further, the device inspection includes device component inspection, the method further comprising;

receiving a signal specifying at least one of an expiration date of a device component and a consumption value of the device component; and

storing the at least one of an expiration date and consumption value in the component value fields in the record.

20. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the record includes fields for a device reset indicator, a device de-activation indicator, and logical components;

and

wherein further, the device testing includes;

initiating internal testing of at least one logical component of the safety device;

recording results of the internal testing in a respective logical component field; and

setting one of the device reset indicator and device de-activation indicator in the record based upon the results of the internal testing.
