Abstract

A surgical staple having at least one projection formed thereon. In various embodiments, the projection is formed on a crown of the surgical staple. In one various embodiment, the projection surrounds, or is positioned adjacent to, at least one deformable member of the surgical staple. In one embodiment, the projection can apply an increased compressive force or pressure to soft tissue surrounding the deformable member prior to the deformable members puncturing a hole in the soft tissue. As a result of the increased compressive force or pressure on the tissue, after staple deployment, blood flow proximate deformable member puncture holes can be reduced.

Claims

1. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a staple including a crown and a deformable member;

a staple cartridge including a cavity, wherein at least a portion of said deformable member is removably stored within said cavity; and

an anvil, wherein said anvil includes a pocket configured to deform said deformable member, and wherein said crown includes a projection adjacent to said deformable member configured to compress soft tissue positioned intermediate said projection and said pocket.

2. The surgical stapler of claim 1, wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown, wherein said staple cartridge includes a deck, wherein said cavity includes an opening in said deck, and wherein said deck includes a recess configured to receive said crown.

3. The surgical stapler of claim 2, wherein said deck has a top surface, wherein said projection extends above said top surface when said crown is positioned within said recess.

The surgical stapler of claim 2, wherein said deck includes a top surface, wherein said anvil further includes a tissue compression surface, and wherein, when said anvil is positioned opposite said staple cartridge, a distance defined between said tissue compression surface and said top surface is greater than a distance defined between said projection and said pocket.

The surgical stapler of claim 1, wherein said projection and said pocket are configured to apply a first pressure to soft tissue positioned intermediate said projection and said pocket, wherein said staple cartridge includes a first tissue compression surface and said anvil includes a second tissue compression surface, and wherein said first tissue compression surface and said second tissue compression surface are configured to apply a second pressure to soft tissue positioned therebetween which is less than said first pressure.

6. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler having an anvil, said staple cartridge assembly comprising:

a staple including a crown and a deformable member, wherein the anvil includes a pocket configured to deform said deformable member; and

a staple cartridge including a deck and a cavity, wherein said cavity is configured to removably store at least a portion of said deformable member, and wherein at least one of said crown and said deck includes a projection configured to compress soft tissue between said projection and the anvil pocket.

7. The surgical stapler of claim 6, wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown, and wherein said deck includes a recess configured to receive said crown.

8. The surgical stapler of claim 7, wherein said deck includes a top surface, and wherein said projection extends above said top surface when said crown is positioned within said recess.

9. The surgical stapler of claim 8, wherein the anvil further includes a tissue compression surface, and wherein, when the anvil is positioned opposite said staple cartridge, a distance defined between the tissue compression surface and said top surface is greater than a distance defined between said projection and the anvil pocket.

The surgical stapler of claim 6, wherein said projection and the anvil pocket are configured to apply a first pressure to soft tissue positioned intermediate said projection and the anvil pocket, wherein said staple cartridge includes a first tissue compression surface and the anvil includes a second tissue compression surface, and wherein said first tissue compression surface and the second tissue compression surface are configured to apply a second pressure to soft tissue positioned therebetween which is less than said first pressure.

11. A staple for use with a surgical stapler having an anvil, said staple comprising:

a crown;

a deformable member, wherein the anvil includes a pocket configured to deform said deformable member; and

a projection extending from at least one of said crown and said deformable member configured to compress soft tissue between said projection and the anvil pocket.

12. The staple of claim 11, wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown.

13. The staple of claim 12, wherein said crown includes an aperture, and wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown within said aperture.

14. The staple of claim 11, further comprising a base, wherein said deformable member extends from said base, wherein said crown includes a recess, and wherein said recess is configured to receive said base.

15. The staple of claim 11, wherein said projection circumscribes said deformable member.

16. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler having an anvil, said staple cartridge assembly comprising:

a staple including a crown and a deformable member, wherein said crown includes a staple tissue compression surface adjacent said deformable member, wherein the anvil includes an anvil tissue compression surface and a pocket, and wherein the pocket is configured to deform said deformable member; and

a staple cartridge including a deck and a cavity, wherein said deck includes a staple cartridge tissue compression surface, wherein said cavity is configured to removably store at least a portion of said deformable member, and wherein, when the anvil tissue compression surface is aligned with said staple cartridge tissue compression surface, said staple tissue compression surface and the anvil pocket define a distance therebetween which is less than a distance between the anvil tissue compression surface and said staple cartridge tissue compression surface.

17. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 16, wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown, and wherein said deck includes a recess configured to receive said crown.

18. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 16, wherein said crown is removably attached to said deck.

19. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 16, wherein said surgical staple includes a base, wherein said deformable member extends from said base, wherein said crown is integrally molded with said deck, and wherein said staple cartridge further includes a driver configured to force said base of said staple against said crown and dislodge said crown from said deck.
