Abstract

A mass spectrometer using a one-dimensional ion trap is disclosed. The mass spectrometer having the one-dimensional ion trap can trap a great amount of ions, and the provision of a mass spectrometric analyzer capable of operation in a low vacuum eliminates the need of a high vacuum.

Claims

1. An ion trap comprising a means for trapping the charged particles at the one-dimensional potential formed by the potential due to a DC voltage and the potential due to an AC voltage.

2. The ion trap according to claim 1, comprising:

a first electrode connected to the DC voltage;

a second electrode connected to the AC voltage;

power supplies for applying a voltage to the first and second electrodes; and

a control unit for controlling the voltage applied from the power supplies;

wherein the one-dimensional potential is formed between the first electrode and the second electrode.

3. The ion trap according to claim 2,

wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are so shaped that the density of the force exerted on the charged particles between the first and second electrodes is distributed upward from low to high level.

4. The ion trap according to claim 2,

wherein one of the first electrode and the second electrode is a solid-cylindrical electrode and the other is a hollow-cylindrical electrode sharing the same axis as and surrounding the solid-cylindrical electrode.

5. The ion trap according to claim 2,

wherein one of the first and second electrodes is a solid-spherical electrode and the other is a hollow-spherical electrode surrounding the solid-spherical electrode.

6. The ion trap according to claim 1,

wherein the DC voltage is an electrostatic voltage and the AC voltage is a radio frequency voltage.

8. The ion trap according to claim 2,

wherein the local minimum value of potential is formed by the control unit controlling the AC voltage and the DC voltage applied from the power supplies, and the charged particles are trapped between the first electrode and the second electrode.

9. The ion trap according to claim 4,

wherein an wall electrode is arranged at each end of the electrode unit, and an electrostatic voltage is applied to the wall electrodes from the power supply.

10. The ion trap according to claim 4,

wherein the hollow-cylindrical electrode includes a pair of wall electrodes shorted to the ends, respectively, of the hollow-cylindrical electrode, and an electrostatic voltage is applied to the wall electrodes from the power supply.

11. The ion trap according to claim 1,

wherein the solid-cylindrical electrode and the hollow-cylindrical electrode each have a constant radius along the axial direction.

12. The ion trap according to claim 1,

wherein the vacuum exhausting means is a low-vacuum exhausting means.

7. An ion trap comprising:

an electrode unit including a solid-cylindrical electrode and a hollow-cylindrical electrode sharing the same axis as and surrounding the solid-cylindrical electrode; and

power supplies for applying an AC voltage to one of the solid-cylindrical electrode and the hollow-cylindrical electrode and a DC voltage to the other.

13. A mass spectrometer comprising:

an ion trap including an electrode unit having a solid-cylindrical electrode and a hollow-cylindrical electrode sharing the axis with and surrounding the solid-cylindrical electrode, power supplies for applying an AC voltage to one of the solid-cylindrical electrode and the hollow-cylindrical electrode and a DC voltage to the other, and a control unit for controlling the voltage applied from the power supplies; and

a current detection means for detecting the current of the electrode unit;

wherein the mass spectrum of the ions trapped in the electrode unit is acquired by measuring the current on the current detection means while at the same time scanning by changing, through the control unit, the magnitude of the voltage applied from the power supplies.

14. The mass spectrometer according to claim 13,

wherein the AC voltage applied from the power supply is scanned downward by the control unit while at the same time measuring the current through the current detection means.

15. The mass spectrometer according to claim 13,

wherein the DC voltage applied from the power supply is scanned upward while at the same time measuring the current through the current detection means.

16. The mass spectrometer according to claim 13,

wherein the control unit controls the frequency amplitude value of the AC voltage thereby to isolate ions having a specified m/z range and trapped in the ion trap.

17. The mass spectrometer according to claim 13,

wherein the control unit controls the DC voltage value thereby to isolate ions having a specified m/z range and trapped in the ion trap.

18. The mass spectrometer according to claim 13,

wherein the control unit sets the radio frequency amplitude to not lower than 2 MHz.

19. An ion mobility analyzer comprising:

an ion trap including an electrode unit having a solid-cylindrical electrode and a hollow-cylindrical electrode sharing the axis with and surrounding the solid-cylindrical electrode, power supplies for applying an AC voltage to one of the solid-cylindrical electrode and the hollow-cylindrical electrode and a DC voltage to the other, and a control unit for controlling the voltage applied from the power supplies; and

a current detection means for detecting the current of the electrode unit;

wherein the control unit isolates the ions having a specified m/z value, and the current detection means measures the current due to the isolated ions by turning off the voltage applied from the power supplies thereby to measure the mobility of the ions trapped in the electrode unit.

20. The ion mobility analyzer according to claim 19,

wherein the control unit turns off the DC voltage applied from the power supply and the current detection means measures the current of the hollow-cylindrical electrode.

21. The ion mobility analyzer according to claim 19,

wherein the control unit turns off the AC voltage applied from the power supply and the current detection means measures the current of the solid-cylindrical electrode.
