Abstract

A composite display is disclosed. In some embodiments, a composite display comprises a compound paddle comprising a plurality of components and configured to sweep out an area. A plurality of pixel elements is mounted on at least one component of the plurality of components. Selectively activating one or more of the plurality of pixel elements while the compound paddle sweeps the area causes at least a portion of an image to be rendered.

Claims

1. A composite display, comprising:

a compound paddle comprising a plurality of components and configured to sweep out an area; and

a plurality of pixel elements mounted on at least one component of the plurality of components;

wherein selectively activating one or more of the plurality of pixel elements while the compound paddle sweeps the area causes at least a portion of an image to be rendered.

2. A composite display as recited in claim 1, wherein at least one component of the plurality of components is associated with an axis of motion.

3. A composite display as recited in claim 1, wherein one or more components of the plurality of components impart motion to one or more other components of the plurality of components.

4. A composite display as recited in claim 1, wherein the plurality of components comprises a first component rotating about a first axis of rotation which first component is coupled to a second component rotating about a second axis of rotation.

5. A composite display as recited in claim 4, wherein the first component is larger than the second component.

6. A composite display as recited in claim 4, wherein the first component is smaller than the second component.

7. A composite display as recited in claim 4, wherein pixel elements are mounted on both the first component and the second component..

A composite display as recited in claim 1, wherein the plurality of components comprises a first component configured to rotate at least partially about an axis of rotation and provide rotary motion which is at least in part converted into translational motion for a second component by a coupling of the second component to the first component via a third component.

9. A composite display as recited in claim 8, wherein the axis of rotation comprises a first axis of rotation and wherein the second component is configured to rotate at least partially about a second axis of rotation.

10. A composite display as recited in claim 8, wherein the second component comprises the at least one component on which a plurality of pixel elements are mounted.

11. A composite display as recited in claim 8, wherein the sweep area comprises a sector-like area.

12. A composite display as recited in claim 1, wherein the plurality of components comprises a first component configured to rotate at least partially about an axis of rotation and impart motion to a second component coupled to the first component.

13. A composite display as recited in claim 12, wherein the second component comprises the at least one component on which a plurality of pixel elements are mounted.

14. A composite display as recited in claim 12, wherein the sweep area is nearly rectangular.

15. A composite display as recited in claim 1, wherein at least one pixel element comprises a light emitting diode (LED).

16. A method, comprising:

obtaining a compound paddle comprising a plurality of components and configured to sweep out an area; and

mounting a plurality of pixel elements on at least one component of the plurality of components;

wherein selectively activating one or more of the plurality of pixel elements while the compound paddle sweeps the area causes at least a portion of an image to be rendered.

17. A method as recited in claim 16, wherein at least one component of the plurality of components is associated with an axis of motion.

18. A method as recited in claim 16, wherein one or more components of the plurality of components impart motion to one or more other components of the plurality of components.

19. A composite display, comprising:

a paddle configured to sweep out an area; and

a plurality of pixel elements mounted on the paddle;

wherein one or more of a size and a shape of the paddle varies based on an angular position of the paddle and wherein selectively activating one or more of the plurality of pixel elements while the paddle sweeps the area causes at least a portion of an image to be rendered.

20. A composite display as recited in claim 19, wherein the paddle comprises a component of a compound paddle comprised of a plurality of components.

21. A composite display, comprising:

an array of one or more paddles, wherein each paddle is configured to sweep out an area, each paddle includes a plurality of pixel elements, and selectively activating one or more of the plurality of pixel elements of each paddle while the paddle sweeps its associated area causes at least a portion of an image to be rendered; and

one or more direct mount areas installed with the array of paddles, wherein each direct mount area includes pixel elements that are fixed in place.

22. A composite display as recited in claim 21, wherein sweep areas of one or more paddles in the array do not overlap.

23. A composite display as recited in claim 21, wherein sweep areas of one or more paddles in the array overlap.

24. A composite display as recited in claim 21, wherein each direct mount area comprises a stationary printed circuit board (PCB).

25. A composite display as recited in claim 21, wherein one or more of the direct mount areas are in a different plane than the array of paddles.
